The team reporter analyzes Yang Hanson's role for the new season: he is currently the third center, and he will have opportunities when Roby is absent.

On July 21, Beijing time, Trail Blazers reporter Mike Richman discussed Yang Hanson in his latest podcast, evaluating Hanson's performance in the Summer League and analyzing his role for the upcoming season. According to Richman, Hanson is still the third center on the team for now, but he will get plenty of playing time when Roby is unavailable.

Richman believes that Yang Hanson showcased his passing ability and willingness to engage during the Summer League, along with a solid performance in rim protection.

“In the first game, he displayed his strengths; in the second game, he tried to do more; in the third game, he showed his shooting ability and willingness to shoot from outside, as he wanted to prove he has more to offer. By the fourth game, it seemed like he was saying, ‘I can do many different things; watch me drive to the basket.’ He appeared increasingly comfortable during the games. I found his performance impressive as it added layers and variety to the game.”

As for his weaknesses, Richman mentioned strength and stamina.“As he develops and adapts to the league and transitions, he needs to work with NBA strength coaches and the Trail Blazers' health and performance team to become stronger, enhance his endurance and cardiovascular fitness, allowing him to play longer and utilize his strength. I believe his low-post offense in the Summer League never truly stood out because, when facing the strongest low-post defenders, he lacked the strength to reach his desired positions, thus limiting his low-post offensive capabilities.”

Regarding the role Yang Hanson might play on the team next season, Richman also provided analysis—

“I think Yang Hanson performed well enough that I genuinely hope he gets a considerable amount of playing time next season. When the Trail Blazers decided to waive Ayton instead of trying to trade him for other contracts or keeping him around to see how things go,they indeed created opportunities for Yang Hanson, there's no doubt about that.”

“Butif you ask me to guess right now (in July), he will be the third center on the team.If you want to include him in your dream starting lineup, that's certainly possible; I encourage everyone to dream big. But realistically, Klingen is likely to be the starting center for the Trail Blazers in the season opener, probably playing around 26 to 28 minutes. They will try to get Robert Williams on the court, but even last year, during Roby's recovery from knee surgery in the offseason, they were very cautious with him; he played limited minutes, not half a game, and not every night for 25 minutes—probably around 12 to 14 minutes, split into two stints of about 7 minutes each, once in the first half and once in the second half.”

“If Klingen plays 28 minutes and Roby plays 14 minutes, the remaining time, the Trail Blazers might go small, which would limit Hanson's playing time. However, there will still be opportunities for him to play. I think it’s unlikely he will share the court with the other two bigs too much in his first year; it’s almost impossible for him to be on the court with Klingen at the same time. There might be some time shared with Roby, but I don't believe that would maximize either of their values. So, he is indeed the third center, but Roby will miss some games naturally, as he won't play back-to-backs; the team will be cautious with him and provide rest days. We saw that last year, and that was before another knee surgery. Therefore, Hanson will have opportunities to play.”

“I believehis most likely role in his rookie season will be on the fringes of the rotation, but there will be a few brief opportunities at the start of the season due to the team's health issues and foul troubles, giving him a chance to prove he belongs on the court. As the season progresses, the team may want to see what he can do, and even if Roby remains healthy, he will naturally miss some games due to the team's conservative strategy, so Hanson will naturally receive some playing time.”

Finally, Richman reminds Yang Hanson's fans:not to be overly optimistic just because of these four impressive Summer League games.
