Oh no! A 37.5 million dollar minimum salary contract! The NBA's second overall pick has completely flopped.

Shams: Bagley has joined the Wizards on a one-year deal. Hoops Rumors followed up with the report that Bagley signed a fully guaranteed minimum salary contract worth 3.08 million dollars, with the Wizards paying 2.3 million dollars and the league subsidizing 780,000 dollars.

As a former second overall pick in the 2018 draft, Bagley has already played for four teams in just seven years in the NBA: the Kings, Pistons, Wizards, and Grizzlies. To date, he averages 12 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in the regular season, while his playoff stats stand at 8.5 points and 3 rebounds per game, constantly being traded or on the verge of being traded.

In 2022, Bagley was sent from the Kings to the Pistons in a four-team trade; in 2024, the Pistons traded Bagley to the Wizards; in 2025, he was sent from the Wizards to the Grizzlies in a three-team deal.

So far in his NBA career, the largest contract Bagley has received was the three-year, 37.5 million dollar deal offered by the Pistons in 2022. However, at just 26 years old, he has now fallen to the point of only being able to sign a minimum salary deal.

The reason for his fall from grace to being a fringe player in the league is largely due to Bagley's lack of versatility. As a center, he lacks the static talent, standing only 2.03 meters tall without the listed heights of 2.08 or 2.11 meters; as a power forward, his offensive skills are limited, with virtually no mid-range or long-range shooting ability.

Another issue that makes teams wary of Bagley is his significant injury history. Throughout his career, he has only played a maximum of 62 games in a single season (2018-19), totaling just 289 regular season games over seven seasons, averaging about 41 games per season...

If you see news next summer of Bagley leaving the NBA to take his talents to other overseas leagues, don’t be surprised. Moreover, the examples of high draft picks flopping are quite common; the "famous" first overall pick in the 2013 draft, Bennett, is now making a living in Taiwan's basketball league.

By the way, Deandre Ayton, who was picked ahead of Bagley in the 2018 draft, joined the Lakers on a buyout after leaving the Trail Blazers, signing for an average annual salary of 8.3 million dollars. As for the top two picks, while the second pick struggles, players like Doncic, Jaren Jackson, Trae Young, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are all thriving.
