The Lakers released guard Shake Milton to create space for Smart once he officially joins the team.
This will mark Smart's third team in two years. If he chooses to wear number 36, he will become the first player in Lakers history to do so.
Other teams involved in the pursuit of Smart included theMilwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns.
Smart has not averaged over 10 points per game in a season since the 2023-2024 season with the Memphis Grizzlies. He recorded an average of 9.0 points, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game last year as a player for the Grizzlies and Wizards.
The 11-year veteran was traded to the Wizards as part of a three-team trade involving the Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings that also included Colby Jones (from Kings), Alex Len (from Kings), and a 2025 first-round draft pick (MEM).
Smart is a three-time All-Defensive team honoree, having won the 2021 Defensive Player of the Year award. The former Wizard and sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft achieved a career-high three-point shooting percentage (44%) in the latter half of the 2024-2025 season.
