On July 22, Beijing time, the Los Angeles Lakers may not have completed significant moves in this offseason yet. According to NBA reporter Brett Siegel from ClutchPoints, the Lakers have discussed the possibility of trading Caldwell-Pope and Donte DiVincenzo with the Memphis Grizzlies and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Reports indicate that discussions regarding Caldwell-Pope began after he was involved in a trade concerning Desmond Bane and the Orlando Magic. Caldwell-Pope played for the Lakers for four seasons, appearing in 292 games, averaging 11.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1 steal, with shooting percentages of 43.6% from the field and 37.8% from three-point range, winning a championship with the Lakers in the 2019-20 season. He secured his second championship while playing for the Nuggets in the 2022-23 season.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the Timberwolves almost immediately rejected discussions related to DiVincenzo after receiving the Lakers' trade proposal.
Acquiring either of these two players could significantly alter the Lakers' championship pursuit, as both can provide the team with much-needed versatility on both ends of the court—especially defensively.
During his time with the Orlando Magic last season, Caldwell-Pope averaged 8.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists.
The 28-year-old DiVincenzo averaged 11.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.6 assists last season with the Timberwolves.
