On July 25, Beijing time, ESPN commentator Perkins shared his initial predictions for the regular season MVP of the new season, revealing his top five rankings. Last season's MVP, Alexander, is placed fifth on Perkins' list, and he expressed his belief that Doncic will secure the MVP next season. Here’s his countdown reveal—
“Fifth, Alexander, do you think he has already reached his peak? This guy has won MVP, Finals MVP, and an NBA championship, yet he is still not satisfied. Next season, he will return with a mission; he wants more. He is the best player in the world. This world’s best player has gladly accepted this title; he has that feeling, that drive, and he knows what it’s like to be a champion and an MVP. He will give his all to keep the trophy in Oklahoma City, at his home.”
“Fourth, Jokic, he is one of the most skilled big men in basketball history. You see, the Denver Nuggets are making moves, right? They changed coaches last season, just brought in Cameron Johnson, and welcomed back his championship teammate Bruce Brown. I believe Jokic will return with a fresh state and energy, which is not good news for other teams in the league. This guy finished second in MVP voting last season, and he will strive to win another MVP while helping the Nuggets secure more wins in the competitive Western Conference.”
“Third, Anthony Edwards. You must have heard what he said when the team was eliminated in the Western Conference Finals. He said, ‘No one works harder than me,’ and I believe him. I trust this guy will make a strong comeback, averaging 30 points next season; he will come with a mission. The loss in the Western Conference Finals was a blow to his pride, and we all know that people like Edwards tend to grow stronger in adversity and when faced with responsibility.”
“Second, Giannis Antetokounmpo. Some people are always hoping he will leave Milwaukee, but he will stay with the Bucks, and the Bucks want him to stay. Did you see his performance at the end of last season? His stats were explosive. Doc Rivers said he would play as a point forward, and he even had a game last season with 20 assists. I look forward to Giannis’ growth this year; he will further enhance himself while ensuring he averages 30 points and 12 rebounds, making his teammates better. He is the second on the list.”
“First, Luka (Doncic). I mentioned this a few days ago, and I’ll say it again. It’s the more muscular Luka. He is now full of determination, feeling overlooked. The Mavericks gave up on him and traded him. There have been many rumors and criticisms about him during the offseason, quite a few from me, including my comments about his defense. But suddenly, we see a motivated Luka, driven by being underestimated, and starting to hold himself to a higher standard. This is my list, not anyone else’s.”
