Hello everyone, I'm Game Xiaodi.
As you all know, after several version changes to support items, you now need to choose between Glory of the Neighbor and Extreme Shadow first before selecting the later items like Star Spring, Shadow Shape, Redemption, and Running Wolf. However, Xiaodi has noticed that many support players are quite aware of the effects of items like Star Spring and know how to choose them, but they are unfamiliar with the first-tier Glory of the Neighbor/Extreme Shadow and have no idea how to decide. This article will explain that.

Before we start, let's introduce the effects of these two items. Glory of the Neighbor can be simply understood as providing bonus magic and armor resistance, while Extreme Shadow provides attack speed, mana regeneration, and cooldown reduction bonuses. Additionally, note that the support aura affects both the user and teammates, but teammates only receive 50% of the effect.
If we only consider the support's own benefits, the choice depends on the hero's specific requirements, as heroes have vastly different roles and mechanics. For example, for functional soft supports like Cai Wenji and Yao, Extreme Shadow is more effective. Although attack speed may not be very useful for them, mana regeneration and cooldown reduction are essential, since skills are key to these heroes' effectiveness. Moreover, attack speed isn't entirely wasted because these soft supports usually stick with the marksman early game and can share the buff with teammates.

But for heroes like Su Lie or Dun Shan, who rely on their own tankiness to absorb damage, skills are just a bonus. Since they need to recall frequently to replenish due to taking damage, cooldown reduction and mana regeneration are less significant. Thus, the dual resistance bonuses from Glory of the Neighbor are clearly more valuable.

If you're a support with high awareness and want to provide maximum help to the team, Glory of the Neighbor is the first choice.
In the early game, the dual resistance bonus from Glory of the Neighbor provides straightforward damage reduction, which is very intuitive. In contrast, Extreme Shadow's attack speed, mana regeneration, and cooldown reduction need to be further converted into damage output, and cannot be calculated directly. Since heroes' early game damage is already low, even with these bonuses the improvement is not very noticeable.

Furthermore, dual resistance has broad adaptability—all heroes can benefit from it. However, attack speed is not very useful for mages, mana regeneration is wasted on heroes like Marco Polo who have no mana bar, and while cooldown reduction is needed by most, marksmen who rely on basic attacks don't have a high demand for it either.

In essence, the choice between Glory of the Neighbor and Extreme Shadow is fundamentally a matter of prioritizing the team or yourself. There is no absolute right or wrong—it all depends on the team composition and communication.
That's all for today. If you found this helpful, feel free to give a like to support me. If you have anything to say, ask, or want to see, leave a comment below—I'll check them all out~
