Hello everyone, I'm Xiaodi from Gaming.

The other day, someone asked me a very interesting question: for marksmen, whether it's crit build or on-hit build, the playstyle seems to be just spamming basic attacks. So do these two seemingly different builds actually have little difference? Is that really the case? At first glance, it does sound reasonable, but in fact, there are many differences between the two. The reason they both rely on basic attacks is mainly determined by the design of marksman heroes. So where exactly do the differences lie?

Development Speed

Players who frequently play marksmen should know that the development speeds of these two builds differ greatly. The on-hit build clearly develops faster than the crit build. Generally, with two or three items, the on-hit build already has decent damage and combat capability, allowing you to add a defensive item like Mingdao or other tank gear. However, for the crit build, with two or three items, the crit set is just starting to form, but it still lacks combat power. You need to add items like Bloodweeper and Dawn, and it often takes four or five items to complete the build. By then, the game is usually in the late stage, and many matches don't even reach that point.

Survivability

The on-hit build primarily consists of three items: Lightning Dagger, End of the World, and Windchaser. Besides their main on-hit effects, each of these items also provides additional stat bonuses. For example, Lightning Dagger grants some movement speed, End of the World offers lifesteal and bonus health, and Windchaser also gives health bonuses. This makes marksmen with on-hit builds far more survivable than those with crit builds. After all, crit items are focused purely on damage output, with nearly all stats centered around maximizing damage, so they naturally cannot also provide survivability.

Control Feel

Currently, the most popular first item for the on-hit build is Lightning Dagger, simply because it provides a great feel during gameplay. In the early game, marksmen lack attack speed, making it quite uncomfortable to play. However, once Lightning Dagger is completed, in addition to the attack speed boost, it also has a chain lightning AoE effect, which not only accelerates development but also greatly improves the control feel, making the entire playstyle much smoother. The crit build, on the other hand, doesn't offer this sensation. Its biggest appeal is the ability to one-shot squishy targets in the late game, often finishing kills almost without notice—sometimes it feels like you're just clearing minions. That kind of satisfaction is also substantial, but it's a completely different path from the on-hit build.

In the current patch meta, the on-hit build is clearly the more dominant choice. Almost all marksmen are using on-hit builds, with only a few specific heroes sticking to crit builds. However, precisely because of this, the current version's performance for crit heroes is not great. But this situation might change in a future season.
