Hello everyone, I'm Game Xiaodi.

Recently, some players asked Xiaodi, "I don't play jungle much, but sometimes when I get the jungle role, I often don't know whether to take the Tyrant or the Lord first. I see streamers and pros prioritizing the Tyrant, but when I play in mid-to-low rank games, my teammates seem to prefer the Lord." I believe this is a dilemma many players face. So in this episode, let's talk about how to choose between the Tyrant and the Lord. Let's check it out~

Why is the Tyrant more favored in high-tier games?

The Tyrant first spawns at 4 minutes and evolves into the Dark Tyrant at 10 minutes, always providing combat attributes—specifically increasing the whole team's damage. For the dominant side, this damage buff is like adding wings to a tiger. Already ahead in gold, adding a damage buff makes team fights almost overwhelming. Moreover, the Tyrant buff doesn't interfere with tower-pushing tempo; after wiping out the enemy team, you can still push towers without any delay.

For the disadvantaged side, the Tyrant's value is equally undeniable. In a losing game, being behind in gold makes team fights hard to win. But if you can seize the opportunity to steal a Tyrant, the damage buff can somewhat compensate for the gold deficit, giving the losing team a higher chance in fights. Especially in today's fast-paced meta, the extra damage from the Tyrant can often be the deciding factor in team fights.

Why is the Lord more popular in mid-to-low tier games?

The Lord also first spawns at 4 minutes and evolves into the Shadow Lord at 10 minutes, mainly providing minion waves to push lanes (and the Shadow Lord gives the Shadow Realm bonus). The reason mid-to-low tier junglers prefer the Lord is actually quite practical.

First, from the jungler's own rotation perspective, most junglers now follow a formulaic farming route—clearing from the gold lane to the clash lane. The Lord's pit happens to be on the clash lane side. After clearing a full jungle rotation, the jungler just passes by the Lord pit. At this rank, there's less strategic depth; going out of the way to take the Tyrant wastes time, so it's easier to just take the Lord on the spot. This mindset is very common in mid-to-low tier games. After taking the Lord, you can also conveniently soak a wave of minions before heading back to farm—your rotation is not interrupted at all.

Second, a more critical point: teammates in mid-to-low tier games often don't know how to utilize the Tyrant buff. After taking the Tyrant, they might just go about their own business without grouping for team fights, making the buff essentially wasted. On the other hand, the Lord's minion waves are different. Once the minions show up on the lane, even the most clueless teammates will follow them to push towers. And if the enemy team dares to leave the lane, they'll surely lose a tower.

So, both the Lord and the Tyrant are fine to take. However, one thing to note: for the last Lord and Tyrant before the 20-minute mark, the Tyrant has the highest priority. Late-game marksmen with the Tyrant buff get a massive boost in damage, which can give a huge advantage in the Storm Dragon King fight and secure that critical team battle.
