From his beginnings in Egypt to becoming one of the Premier League's top stars, Salah says that winning the PFA Player of the Year award three times is a remarkable milestone to be proud of.
Mohamed Salah was the focal point at the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) awards ceremony, as he was named Men's Player of the Year for the third time in his career. The Egyptian forward could not hide his happiness and pride as he accepted the award.
Salah spoke in Manchester: “Looking back at myself, a boy from Egypt now at the pinnacle of football making history, it fills me with immense pride.” He emphasized that this is not just a personal accomplishment, but also a testament to his relentless efforts since leaving home to pursue a football dream in Europe.
During the 2023/24 season, Salah scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists, playing a key role in Liverpool's Premier League title win. As a result, he surpassed other strong contenders like Alexis Mac Allister, Cole Palmer, Bruno Fernandes, Declan Rice, and Alexander Isak to claim the honor. This marks his third PFA award, following his wins in 2018 and 2022.
When asked about Liverpool’s prospects this season, Salah commented: “You can't say for sure if we are stronger or not. We have some talented new faces, but we've also said goodbye to some great players. What matters is that core members like myself and Virgil van Dijk help the newcomers adapt. Playing for Liverpool comes with huge pressure, and we want to share our experience to help them become more resilient.”
In the Young Player of the Year category, Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers gave a determined speech. After a breakout debut season with 14 goals in 54 matches, the 21-year-old stated: “I want to be remembered like Gerrard, Rooney, or Beckham. Winning this award is just the beginning, and I have many more goals ahead.”
Besides Salah and Rogers, the ceremony also recognized Mariona Caldentey (Arsenal) as Women's Player of the Year and Olivia Smith (Arsenal) as Young Women's Player of the Year. James Trafford, Richard Kone, and Michael Cheek received awards for Championship, League One, and League Two, respectively.
