At 38, Lionel Messi further cements his status as the number one MLS star, picking up another personal accolade for his stunning goal in round 29 versus LA Galaxy.
There’s no doubt that Lionel Messi remains the biggest name in Major League Soccer (MLS), even at age 38. The Argentine superstar’s extraordinary talent makes a difference every time he plays, earning him countless honors. Just hours before Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup clash with Tigres UANL, El Pulga received yet another individual distinction.
According to MLS’s official social media accounts, Lionel Messi was honored for his recent goal, as his strike for Inter Miami against LA Galaxy was selected as the “Goal of the Week” for matchday 29.
Messi only played 45 minutes at Chase Stadium, but that was enough for him to dazzle the crowd with his trademark magic. With the score tied at 1-1 and only minutes left, Messi received a pass from Rodrigo De Paul, skillfully evaded two defenders, and fired a left-footed shot into the corner of the net, leaving goalkeeper Novak Micovic with no chance.
That moment of genius earned Messi the “Goal of the Week” award, with an overwhelming 80% of the votes. Second place went to Evander (Cincinnati FC) for his goal in the 3-2 win over Portland Timbers, which received just 13.8%.
The “Goal of the Week for Round 29” marks the sixth time Messi has won this category in the current MLS season, adding to his growing list of achievements since joining Inter Miami in July 2023.
Previously, Messi was named MLS Most Valuable Player for the 2024 season, won “Player of the Month” four times (twice in 2024, twice in 2025), featured in the 2024 MLS Best XI, was selected for the 2025 All-Star team (though he declined to participate), and claimed both the Best Player and Top Scorer awards in the 2023 Leagues Cup.
Currently, Leo Messi leads the MLS scoring charts with 19 goals, one ahead of Sam Surridge from Nashville SC. If he maintains this performance, Messi is likely to be the top contender for the MVP award for a second consecutive season.
Although he values individual honors, Lionel Messi always emphasizes that team success is most important. In that regard, he has also achieved collective glory with Inter Miami, guiding the club to two historic championships: the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.
This season, Inter Miami was stopped in the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup after losing to Vancouver Whitecaps, and had an impressive run at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup before being eliminated in the round of 16 by Paris Saint-Germain.
