The Argentine Ministry of Security announced that 90 individuals were arrested outside the stadium and taken to police stations for causing disturbances.
The violence erupted during halftime when Chilean fans threw stones, sticks, bottles, and chairs into the area designated for the home team’s supporters. Notably, among the thrown objects was a stun grenade. As the chaotic atmosphere intensified, some Chilean fans had to jump from the stands to escape attacks from the home team’s supporters.
Chile’s ambassador to Argentina, Jose Antonio Viera-Gallo, stated that among the injured, at least one person sustained serious injuries and showed signs of being stabbed.
On social media, Chilean President Gabriel Boric demanded that the tournament organizers be held accountable and take strict action against those responsible for the violence.
Both football clubs condemned the incident. Independiente club president Nestor Grindetti described the violent acts as unacceptable. Meanwhile, players from both teams urged fans to remain calm.
Earlier, in April, two people died during clashes between fans and police outside the Monumental stadium in Santiago before a Copa Libertadores match between Chile’s Colo Colo and Brazil’s Fortaleza club.
