Juventus are reportedly interested in Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire ahead of the January transfer window, but the 30-year-old England international has no intention of leaving and will be looking to make a chance under new boss Ruben Amorim.
Under Thiago Motta, Juve have started high and low in Serie A, having been held to draw twice in their last four league games and are currently sitting in sixth place. However, The Old Lady is only two points behind leaders Napoli and still has a chance of winning the title.
However, the long-term injuries of centre-backs Bremer and Cabal have weakened the team's backline, and if the Bianconeri do not find a solution quickly, they risk conceding more crucial points in Serie A and the Champions League. So, Roma Sport reports that Motta wants to bolster the defensive side in the winter transfer window, which he believes is an absolutely necessary move and the club's hierarchy is exploring a variety of options.
The 31-year-old Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire and Bayern Munich's England international Erik Dier are among Juventus' targets. They don't expect to have a big budget to spend in the winter window, so Maguire is an attractive option as the world's most expensive centre-back, who used to be £80 million, has entered the final year of his contract and will soon be free to approach overseas clubs.
Maguire's possession and physicality make him a perfect fit for an Italian league with less intensity than the Premier League, where his slow turnaround speed may no longer be an issue, and the success of a number of Reds veterans in Serie A, including the likes of Smalling, Darmian and Ashley Young, could also attract the 'big heads'.
However, Maguire is believed to want more opportunities under Amorim, who prefers to play in a three-centre-back, while Maguire believes he can be more comfortable if he plays at centre-back in the 343 formation, as he did with England. Maguire is focused on impressing the 39-year-old Portugal boss and proving that he can make a difference in his new tactical system and is confident he could even secure a contract extension.
Maguire has a one-year option of first refusal on his contract with Manchester United, and he believes he can use his performances to entice the club to activate the clause and seek a longer contract extension in the future. United currently have three promising centre-backs – Lisandro Martinez, De Ligt and Lenny Yoro – all of whom are injury-sought, so Maguire still has a chance.
At the moment, the club has not made a final decision on Maguire's future, but the England defender himself has decided not to leave in January and will also reject a preliminary contract offered by a foreign club. If Maguire cannot be acquired, Juventus will consider his Manchester United team-mate Victor Lindelof, whose contract is also about to expire, and AC Milan are also keen to get him.
Maguire is now treating his own muscle injury, which he last featured in early October, so the short-term goal is to get back to training. During the international break, Maguire posted photos of himself training with youngster Toby Collier, declaring that he would be "back soon".
He needs to get back on the pitch as soon as possible and convince the new boss with his performances. Manchester United have been rumored to be bringing in new centre-backs in the future, with Amorim's favourites Gonzalo Inácio and Ousmane Diomande at Sporting, as well as Everton's England international Jarad Branswaite, all of whom have been rumoured with the Red Devils recently.
