Manchester United will face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday in the second round of the Premier League this season. Before their opening away fixture, Ruben Amorim’s selected 21-man roster again omits Danish striker Hojlund, while goalkeeper Andre Onana has returned to the squad and headed south to London with the team.
British media captured 29-year-old Onana walking alongside fellow Cameroonians Mbemo and Cunha on the way to the away game, though his expression was serious. Amorim declined to confirm before the match that Onana would definitely regain the starting spot.
In the first Premier League round, Manchester United lost 0-1 to Arsenal, with both Hojlund and Onana omitted from the matchday squad. However, due to substitute goalkeeper Alphonse Baindil’s error leading to a goal, Onana might now reclaim his position as first-choice keeper, but 22-year-old striker Hojlund has no chance to play.
The €85 million new signing Benjamin Sesko was only a substitute in the last match. If the 22-year-old Slovenian forward starts this round, it will be his Premier League debut as a starter, potentially forming a brand-new attacking trio with fellow newcomers Cunha and Mbemo.
Hojlund is currently negotiating with Serie A champions Napoli and may complete a transfer in the final week of the window, so his absence from the squad is understandable. Besides him, players like Gancho, Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, who Amorim has listed as surplus, are also not included.
Regarding Hojlund’s situation, Amorim commented: "Like any professional player, we need to wait and see. Let’s wait until the summer transfer window closes, then everything will become clear. It’s not about some players leaving for other clubs and then us buying new ones. I don’t know what will happen, but I’m not clearing out players just to bring in new signings. At the moment, those players you mentioned are indeed not part of the squad."
Talking about the attack, Amorim said: "We are playing better, partly because we have different qualities that allow us to adapt during matches. We have more options; Cunha brings a different style, and Sesko is also a distinct type of player whose strengths we can utilize. We are improving, creating more chances, and the team is ready for any kind of game. Our biggest improvement against Arsenal was that we lost possession less during build-up, which benefits the entire team."
Currently, Manchester United only have two injured players: center-back Lisandro Martinez and right-back Mazraoui remain sidelined. Ivorian international Amad Diallo was only a substitute in the first round and may aim to return to the starting eleven this time, possibly switching to right wing-back to compete with Portuguese international Diogo Dalot for a spot.
Mason Mount and Luke Shaw, two injury-prone England internationals, have sparked some debate among fans. Amorim said: "For them, helping Manchester United achieve the club’s goals is more important than England. They are very, very talented players with plenty of experience and many matches played. Mount has won the Champions League, and as for Luke Shaw, I’ve said he’s exceptional when fit, but the key is that they need to play more games."
Manchester United naturally want to secure their first win of the new season, but Amorim warned his players not to underestimate Fulham. "I think playing against Fulham is always tough; they have clear characteristics. Marco Silva is very clever, and they are confident because they have experience and understand the Premier League. It will be a hard match, but every game in the schedule is challenging."
Against Arsenal, Manchester United conceded the only goal from a corner, marking the 23rd time they have been scored on from corners this season, the highest among the top five leagues. Amorim said: "We need to analyze opponents and come up with the best tactics to protect our goal on set pieces. We have been working on this consistently and won’t change because of one goal conceded. The team must prepare the same way for every opponent."
Manchester United’s 21-man squad for the Fulham match: Onana, Baindil, Tom Heaton; Diogo Dalot, Amad Diallo, De Ligt, Tyler Fredrickson, Lenny Yaro, Maguire, Eden Haven, Luke Shaw, Patrick Dogu; Ugarte, Kobe Meno, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes; Cunha, Mbemo, Sesko, Zirkzee.
