Xabi Alonso speaks out about Vinicius Jr's form

At the press conference before the match against Real Oviedo on the morning of August 25th (Vietnam time), head coach Xabi Alonso openly addressed pointed questions regarding Vinicius Jr’s current form, the superstar who dons Real Madrid’s number 7 shirt.

Vinicius Jr. had an explosive 2023/24 season, emerging as one of Europe’s brightest stars with goals, assists, and impressive displays. However, after missing out on the 2024 Ballon d’Or, the 2000-born player showed signs of decline. Although his goal and assist stats remain strong, Vinicius no longer displays the ‘Ballon d’Or level’ brilliance he once did.

In the pre-match press conference for the 2nd round of La Liga 2025/26 against Real Oviedo, Real Madrid’s new head coach Xabi Alonso did not hesitate to respond to doubts about Vinicius Jr’s form:

“Regarding Vinicius? I see him as completely fine. Both in training and during matches, he is fulfilling his role well. There’s no need for excessive worry.”

“Listen, we have only just started working together for a very short period. The preparation time for the new season was quite limited. Before the match against Osasuna, the team had exactly one week to prepare, and for this game against Oviedo, we had only a few days. That amount of time is not enough for everyone to fully adapt to the playing style the coaching staff wants. As for Vinicius, I want to reaffirm once again that he is fine.”

Alonso’s defense was not only meant to reassure the public but also to send a message directly to the Brazilian player: that he trusts Vini’s abilities and does not want external pressure to affect his performance. However, many fans and experts quickly raised the question: is Vini losing confidence, or will he soon bounce back?

Alonso did not avoid the question and responded frankly: “Every season at Real Madrid is important, but I feel this one is something very special. Everyone in the team has a strong desire to prove themselves, and that is good for me as well as for the entire squad.”

Alonso concluded the press conference with an optimistic message: “We have only just begun, and I am excited about what lies ahead. Real Madrid is always a place where outstanding individuals prove their worth, and Vini is an indispensable part of that plan.”

With the new season just underway, Real Madrid still faces many challenges ahead. Matches against Oviedo, Celta Vigo, and Atletico Madrid will serve as benchmarks to assess Vinicius Jr’s true form and the players’ ability to adapt to Alonso’s tactics.
