Matheus Cunha views the pressure at Manchester United as a 'privilege'

Matheus Cunha, the latest addition to Manchester United, recently engaged in a frank interview with Sky Sports. The Brazilian midfielder openly shared his thoughts on different aspects, including his personal life, fan rumors, and the pressure of representing Manchester United.

At the start of the interview, Matheus Cunha openly talked about himself:

“I believe that off the pitch, I always try to be myself — humble and humorous. I make an effort to communicate with everyone, respect others, and constantly seek to learn from all around me.

“But when I step onto the field, I always remember why I am here. I recall all the hardships that shaped who I am. Those challenges don’t work against me; they have to ‘cooperate’ with me. I always try to manage my mindset. It’s not easy, but I always try.”

Matheus Cunha made an impressive debut for Manchester United against Arsenal, registering 4 shots and 4 dribbles, earning the man of the match honors. This performance excited fans and dispelled doubts from some who had questioned him based on his past.

Specifically, while playing for Wolves last season, he missed 5 matches due to two separate suspensions. The first was a 2-match ban after Cunha was found guilty of “inappropriate conduct” towards Ipswich staff following a December 2024 game. Then in March 2025, Cunha was sidelined for 3 more matches after a heated confrontation with defender Milos Kerkez during the FA Cup clash with Bournemouth.

When asked about his thoughts on being labeled hot-headed by some, Cunha responded:

“Honestly, I don’t worry much about those criticisms. I believe every action I take on the pitch comes from my love for football. I have a strong desire to win, to improve both the team and myself to reach our goals. I always believe there’s something greater within me.

Bringing that to United drives me forward. Of course, mistakes happen, and I am no exception. I apologize for those. But everything comes from a good place.

“I always strive to do something positive, even if it’s a bit over the top. I have never put myself in situations that would make others doubt my character because I know exactly who I am.”.

When asked if he feels overwhelmed by the pressure of playing for Manchester United, Cunha quickly replied:

“Honestly, people always talk about the pressure at this club, but I have always wanted to be here. Of course, I understand this is one of the biggest clubs in the world. The pressure is immense, but I try to view it as a privilege. I have always dreamed of coming here, and now that I am here, I can’t use pressure as an excuse. It’s a privilege.”

“When I enter the club’s trophy room, I try not to look at the cups. I hope to write my own story here alongside my teammates.”
