Emiliano Martinez finds himself in a difficult dilemma

It appeared that he would soon find a new team after announcing his exit from Aston Villa in May, yet as the transfer deadline approaches, Emiliano Martinez is still facing a challenging situation. Unexpectedly, the 2022 FIFA Best Goalkeeper is now considered redundant at Villa Park.

In May, Emiliano Martinez emotionally declared his farewell to Aston Villa. Although he did not post an official goodbye on social media, the Argentine goalkeeper shed tears in front of fans, leaving a heartfelt farewell to Aston Villa supporters. However, just a few months later, Martinez's transfer saga has surprised and saddened many.

In the summer of 2025, Aston Villa immediately brought in Marco Bizot as goalkeeper and started him in the Premier League opener, implicitly signaling that Martinez was no longer needed. Yet for Martinez, the keeper who saved the team from many defeats, the situation is ironic: by late August, no club has made a serious offer.

What makes this situation even more tragicomic is that Martinez is not an ordinary goalkeeper. He won the Golden Glove at the 2022 World Cup, recognized as the best goalkeeper of the tournament where Argentina triumphed. Moreover, FIFA named him the “Goalkeeper of the Year” in 2022—a prestigious international accolade proving his talent and peak form. Yet in the transfer market, Martinez has become a “hard-to-sell asset.”

Part of the reason lies in Aston Villa’s puzzling decision. Although they no longer want to keep Martinez, Villa has set an asking price of 40 million euros for a 33-year-old goalkeeper, a figure that has deterred many clubs. Given the volatile transfer market, spending such a large sum on a keeper approaching 33 is more of a loss than a gain. Martinez’s long-term contract with Aston Villa until 2029 and one of the highest wages in the squad further complicate negotiations.

As the new season begins, Martinez stands at the crossroads of fame and rejection in the market. Once the 2022 World Cup Golden Glove winner and FIFA’s “Goalkeeper of the Year,” he now sees his own value become a barrier. Aston Villa demands 40 million, while he, a once-proud keeper, waits for a club willing to accept him.
