McTominay calls to urge former teammate to leave MU

Scott McTominay is said to have personally contacted a former teammate to encourage him to exit Manchester United, opening the door to a significant transfer possibility this summer.

According to sources from Corriere dello Sport (Italy), Scott McTominay has directly reached out to Rasmus Hojlund to convince his ex-Manchester United colleague to join Napoli in the 2025 summer transfer window. This is viewed as a major effort by the Scottish midfielder to strengthen the reigning Serie A champions’ attack ahead of the new season.

McTominay and Hojlund have shared the pitch 34 times at Old Trafford, building a close bond. Leveraging this connection, McTominay hopes his advice will make Hojlund seriously consider leaving MU to seek more playing time in Italy. It is revealed that the “Red Devils” are willing to loan Hojlund out for a fee of 5 million euros, with an option to buy set at 40 million euros.

Hojlund’s future at Old Trafford is highly uncertain. Under coach Ruben Amorim, the 22-year-old Danish striker has lost trust. He was excluded from the starting lineup in MU’s first two Premier League matches of the 2025/26 season against Arsenal and Fulham. Frequent benching forces Hojlund to consider a new club for more regular playing opportunities, especially with Euro 2028 approaching.

Both Napoli and AC Milan are closely monitoring the young striker’s situation. However, Napoli appears more serious due to McTominay’s direct influence, who has revived his career after leaving MU. Joining Napoli in summer 2024, McTominay quickly became a key player under coach Antonio Conte. In the 2024/25 season, he scored 12 goals in 34 matches in Serie A, playing a crucial role in helping Napoli overtake Inter Milan to claim the Scudetto.

In the new season, McTominay and Napoli will begin their title defense by hosting Cagliari on August 30th. Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United will visit Grimsby Town (a League Two club) in the second round of the Carabao Cup next week.

If the Hojlund deal succeeds, it will be significant for Napoli. Not only will it boost their attacking power, but it will also affirm the Southern Italian club’s ambition to maintain Serie A dominance and advance further in the Champions League. With McTominay’s strong involvement, Napoli fans eagerly anticipate seeing Hojlund don the sky-blue jersey this summer.
