Today, our first topic isthe Norwegian Eliteserien: Sarpsborg vs Kristiansund!
After the shocking win against Viking and making it to the Norwegian Cup final, Sarpsborg has struggled badly, currently enduring six games without a win and four straight defeats, an absolute disaster.
But today, they seem somewhat different; the whole squad appears eager to recover. What has changed, and is there actually a chance?
Last Wednesday, they announced a major update: head coach Michelsen and assistant Klebo both resigned simultaneously.
This was highly unexpected.
Firstly, Sarpsborg is known for being patient with their coaches and rarely fires anyone mid-season, at least not in the past decade.
Coaches like Staal and Bilbørn left because bigger clubs offered better pay early in the season, not because they were dismissed.
Secondly, Michelsen has been overall excellent; he even led the team to a surprising victory over Viking on July 10th, securing a spot in the Norwegian Cup final.
Note: Sarpsborg has never won a championship and only reached the final three times in their history, making Michelsen a significant contributor. And yet, he was fired just over a month later?Truly surprising.
It’s not just Michelsen’s departure that’s shocking; their recent performances have also been baffling.
In some matches, the team showed no fighting spirit at all, almost appearing to go through the motions, like in the last game against Vålerenga;
in others, the team was inconsistent, with some players performing normally while others made outrageous mistakes, such as the shocking loss to bottom-ranked Haugesund, full of careless errors as if they feared losing too much.
According to Norwegian journalists’ investigations,Michelsen seems to have lost the players’ support.
On one hand, after his big achievements, he became untouchable, always blaming the players whenever problems arose.
On the other hand, why did the players criticize him for failing to balance 'long-term' and 'current' goals?
Because his high-intensity, rock-and-roll style of football has been exhausting the players, who have been pushing hard for half a season, competing on two fronts and still achieving good results in both league and cup.
But it came at the cost of many injuries, and the players are worn out. Continuing like this, when will it end? Sarpsborg doesn’t really need strong league results since they aren’t competing for European spots anyway.
The players started to wonder,Is the coach sacrificing us to secure his own glory?
The coach can walk away easily, but injuries might trouble players for life.
Therefore, Sarpsborg’s recent strange performances likely reflect the players’ dissatisfaction.
Now that Michelsen has left, today is the first match after his departure, at home, with the players having rested for a week, so the overall performance is expected to improve significantly.
Teams that have been seemingly coasting for a long time often put in a fierce effort suddenly when it counts.
At least, their recent training intensity has been very high.
Note: Currently, assistant coach Nyland is acting as interim head coach.
He is very young and inexperienced, not a long-term choice, and I wouldn’t trust him against just any team.
But coincidentally, today’s opponent is Kristiansund, which might be just right.
Because from 2020 to 2025,he served as an assistant coach at Kristiansund for five years, so he knows Kristiansund’s management, head coach, players, and all intricacies very well.
Therefore, Nyland can precisely address their weaknesses.
Actually, Sarpsborg made many reinforcements in August to fight for the Norwegian Cup final. For example, today, Utvik, who impressed at Sarpsborg before moving to MLS, is confirmed to play.
This team’s overall strength still ranks mid-to-upper level in the Eliteserien, and today isthe first match after “putting things back in order,”can they rebound to the right track and satisfy their fans? What do you think? I’m hoping they get back on track!
