The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has officially appointed Dutch specialist Alexander Zwiers as the new Technical Director.
According to CNN Indonesia, on the evening of August 25, Erick Thohir, Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), announced the appointment of Alexander Zwiers as the new Technical Director of PSSI. The Dutch strategist will replace Indra Sjafri, who has been acting as the interim Technical Director recently.
According to PSSI, the most important task of the new Technical Director is to develop and implement a long-term vision for the national team. Additionally, he is responsible for shaping the playing philosophy, overseeing the development of young players and coaches, as well as coordinating medical departments, data analysis, and professional development.
Alexander Zwiers brings extensive experience both as a coach and technical director across various football systems. He has worked in the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Kazakhstan, China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Jordan.
Starting his career at SC Cambuur and Groningen (Netherlands), Zwiers later took on multiple roles in youth football development such as coaching for the Qatar Football Association, Al Ahli Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), and Al Gharafa (Qatar). A notable highlight was his collaboration with legend Johan Cruyff at Chivas Guadalajara (Mexico).
Beyond that, Zwiers participated in a football academy project at FC Kairat Almaty (Kazakhstan) before continuing his youth development career at Al Wahda (UAE) and Al Shabab (Qatar).
Since 2019, he has served as Technical Director of the Jordan Football Association. This period marked significant success as Zwiers played a key role in leading Jordan to the 2023 Asian Cup final, winning several West Asian youth tournaments, and notably guiding Jordan to qualify for the 2026 World Cup for the first time in history.
Under his leadership, Jordan’s FIFA ranking also improved significantly, rising from around 90th to about 60th in the world.
Zwiers’s arrival is expected to bring comprehensive reforms in the training system, especially in youth football, which is a crucial foundation for the future of the Indonesian national team.
“I am grateful for the opportunity and trust given to me. My wife is Indonesian, and we have been living in Karawaci for the past four years. I am very happy to contribute to Indonesian football,” Zwiers shared during the inauguration ceremony.
