Cristiano Ronaldo became a target of a crypto fraud, as scammers used his reputation to launch counterfeit cryptocurrencies, resulting in substantial damage to investors.
Besides his achievements in football, Ronaldo is also well-known in the crypto space, but recently he faced serious trouble when his identity was impersonated in the digital currency market. The issue began with rumors circulating that Ronaldo would launch his own memecoin. Memecoins are cryptocurrencies that typically lack real value and rely mainly on popularity and social media hype.
Due to Ronaldo’s fame, some scammers quickly took advantage of his name to create fake tokens called CR7. One of these coins reached a market cap of $143 million (about 3,600 billion VND) within minutes before plummeting by 98%, causing heavy losses for investors who rushed to buy. A representative from the data analysis company Bubblemaps stated this was an organized scam campaign.
According to reports, after singer Kanye West released the Yeezy Money coin impressing with a $2 billion market cap, some fraudsters spread rumors that Ronaldo would launch his own memecoin. These scammers used fake accounts to promote counterfeit coins, attracting investors to pour money in before quickly withdrawing it.
Bubblemaps revealed that scammers also exaggerated rumors about a partnership between Ronaldo and Binance—the major cryptocurrency exchange—to boost the coin’s credibility. However, the fake tokens were mainly issued on the Solana platform, and none exceeded $1 million in a short time.
This is not the first time Ronaldo has encountered issues with cryptocurrencies. Previously, he was involved in a lawsuit related to promoting Binance NFTs. Investors filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Binance for violating the Bank Secrecy Act. In this case, Ronaldo was accused of aiding the promotion of fraudulent NFTs that were not officially registered.
This scam has shocked the crypto community. Nevertheless, there are still rumors that Ronaldo might officially launch a memecoin in the future, based on his collaboration with Binance. Some prominent traders, like Sarah Milady, have affirmed that the official CR7 memecoin will be released and predicted it could reach a market capitalization exceeding $20 billion.
Thus, the impersonation of Ronaldo in the crypto market is not only a shock to investors but also raises concerns among fans and experts about the misuse of sports stars’ names in cryptocurrency scams.
