Naturalized players spark intense competition in Indonesia's attacking line

The inclusion of naturalized talents like Zijlstra and Jonathans has fueled a tough contest among forwards, boosting Indonesia’s squad power.

Indonesia’s attacking force is about to receive a significant boost as the naturalization of Mauro Zijlstra and Miliano Jonathans was approved on August 26. Both players could make their debut for Indonesia in a friendly match scheduled for September 2025, depending on when they officially become Indonesian citizens.

Mauro Zijlstra, aged 20, is a striker currently playing for FC Volendam. He is versatile across the front line, capable of playing as a central forward, winger, or second striker, depending on the team’s needs.

Miliano Jonathans, 21 years old and currently with FC Utrecht, is also a versatile player. Jonathans can operate as a winger or forward, adding flexibility to the national team’s lineup.

Both Zijlstra and Jonathans will have to compete fiercely for a starting spot in Indonesia’s squad, alongside notable players such as Ramadhan Sananta, Ragnar Oratmangoen, Stefano Lilipaly, Egy Maulana, and Marselino Ferdinan.

In Indonesia’s recent two matches during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Marselino, Lilipaly, and Egy got playing time under coach Patrick Kluivert’s guidance. However, Ragnar was sidelined due to injury, and Sananta was not called up. Meanwhile, Ole Romeny became the top choice in the attack.

However, Romeny will miss this phase due to an injury sustained in a friendly tournament held in Bandung last month. With some players absent, Zijlstra and Jonathans have a great chance to showcase their skills for Indonesia, especially since it is only a friendly match, allowing coach Kluivert to experiment with new players.

Indonesia’s opponent for the friendly match during the FIFA Matchday in September will be Lebanon. Previously, the match against Kuwait was canceled. Currently, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) is searching for another opponent, but it is challenging as most countries have already scheduled their friendlies for the same period.

This friendly game will be part of Indonesia’s preparation for the 4th round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with crucial matches against Iraq and Saudi Arabia scheduled for October.
