Andre Onana is facing an uncertain path ahead at Manchester United. Despite being a goalkeeper with promise, his irregular displays during the last two seasons have made his standing in the squad uncertain.
Despite recent rumors, Manchester United has not engaged in any talks with West Ham regarding a possible loan for goalkeeper Andre Onana. In fact, Onana has yet to appear this season, with coach Ruben Amorim opting for Altay Bayindir as the starting goalkeeper for the Red Devils’ Premier League matches against Arsenal and Fulham.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper missed the pre-season due to a muscle injury but returned to training last week and was still listed as a substitute in the match against Fulham. Manchester United is expected to sign goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp before the summer transfer window closes, which will increase competition for the goalkeeper spot to four players in the squad.
Within the last 24 hours, reports emerged suggesting West Ham is negotiating a loan deal for Onana, who previously played for Inter Milan. However, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, West Ham currently has no discussions with Manchester United regarding this transfer.
Romano also emphasized that Lammens joining the team does not necessarily mean Onana will leave, although it is possible that an experienced goalkeeper, potentially Bayindir, might depart before the transfer window closes.
Onana is expected to play in the match against Grimsby Town in the second round of the English League Cup on Wednesday night. However, it is unlikely he will start in the game against Burnley on Saturday, as Amorim currently prefers Bayindir despite the goalkeeper’s issues with set-piece situations in the Fulham match.
It is undeniable that Onana has faced many challenges during his two seasons at Manchester United, making several significant mistakes. After the Fulham game, coach Ruben Amorim shared that he considers many factors when selecting the starting goalkeeper, including training sessions, pre-season performances, and official matches.
Onana was linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League last summer, and there were also reports that Inter Milan wanted to re-sign him. Although Onana’s long-term future at Manchester United is uncertain, he may remain this summer to compete with Lammens, while Bayindir might leave.
