Benjamin Sesko showed a lackluster display against the team considered far inferior, Grimsby Town.
Benjamin Sesko made his first start for Manchester United in the Carabao Cup match against Grimsby Town, but instead of making a positive impact, the Slovenian striker became the focus due to disappointing statistics.
The match at Blundell Park marked the first time in 10 years that Man United entered the Carabao Cup from the second round. Expected to easily overcome the League Two side, Ruben Amorim’s team started shakily. In the first half, Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren scored consecutively, giving Grimsby a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, the Red Devils fought back strongly. Bryan Mbeumo rekindled hope with a goal in the 75th minute, followed by Harry Maguire’s equalizer with a header in the 88th minute. However, during the nerve-wracking penalty shootout, their lack of composure led to a bitter elimination by Grimsby.
Overall, Manchester United’s display was forgettable, but Benjamin Sesko’s individual performance raised even more concerns. The £66.3 million signing (excluding add-ons) completed only 11 passes all game, with 7 accurate, resulting in a 63.6% pass accuracy. He lost possession 10 times, an unacceptable figure for a striker expected to lead the attack.
Beyond limited teamwork, Sesko was almost “switched off” offensively. He took 5 shots, only 2 on target, while the other 3 were blocked by Grimsby’s defense. With MU needing a clinical forward, this output clearly falls short of the expectations from coach Amorim and fans alike.
Notably, before joining Old Trafford, Sesko was very confident, stating: “From the moment I arrived, I felt the positive energy and family atmosphere created by the club. This is the perfect place for me to grow and reach my highest ambitions.” However, after two substitute appearances and one start, the 22-year-old striker is still struggling to find his footing.
With a congested schedule ahead, MU must quickly move past the Carabao Cup shock and return to Premier League action, hosting Burnley this weekend. This will be Sesko’s chance to prove his worth as a marquee signing, or risk becoming an early disappointment at Old Trafford.
