Andre Onana has caused turmoil inside Manchester United by seeking to revise his contract to eliminate the pay cut clause, which provoked the fury of manager Ruben Amorim and left him in an uncertain situation.
According to The Athletic, Onana returned to Carrington early in the summer hoping to renew his contract after his wages were cut by 25% because MU failed to qualify for the Champions League. The Cameroonian goalkeeper earns around £140,000 per week, but this amount was immediately reduced under a team-wide clause. Onana wants to cancel this clause, but his request was rejected, and he also faced dissatisfaction from coach Ruben Amorim.
This “unreasonable” action led to Onana being monitored more closely. Moreover, he suffered a hamstring injury during pre-season friendlies while not being fully fit, further diminishing the coaching staff’s confidence in him. “This request was not welcomed by Amorim”, sources confirmed.
In this context, several European and Saudi Arabian clubs made contact, but only Monaco showed genuine interest. However, they quickly withdrew when MU set a price tag of £30 million. Onana’s representatives repeatedly questioned the club, seeking a transfer, but the management insisted the goalkeeper remains part of their plans.
Nevertheless, inconsistent performances from both Onana and Altay Bayindir early in the season forced MU to sign Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on the last day of the transfer window. This created a surplus of four goalkeepers competing for the starting spot in the Red Devils’ dressing room, while faith in Onana continued to wane.
In fact, Onana has made several mistakes over the past two seasons, leaving his future uncertain. The arrival of Lammens not only increased pressure but also opened up the possibility that MU might sell Onana in January 2026 if no transfer is arranged by September, as the transfer windows in Saudi Arabia and Turkey remain open.
Currently, Onana has lost his starting position to Bayindir and disappointed in the Carabao Cup match against Grimsby. Due to what is seen as unprofessional attitude and unimpressive form, the 29-year-old goalkeeper faces the risk of becoming surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
The wage demand not only led to punishment from Amorim but also put Onana in a difficult spot: losing his place, facing doubts about his future, and possibly being pushed out of MU earlier than expected. Given the current situation, it seems only a matter of time before the Cameroonian leaves Old Trafford.
