Jude Bellingham will come back from his shoulder injury in October with the tough task of adjusting to a different role within Xabi Alonso’s strategic setup.
One of Alonso’s toughest tasks upon taking charge of Real Madrid is to establish the best core lineup, especially in midfield, where he has many quality options but only three starting spots. Tchouameni and Valverde are almost certain starters, while the last spot is fiercely contested among Bellingham, Camavinga, Arda Guler, and Dani Ceballos.
According to journalist Mario Cortegana (The Athletic), Bellingham will no longer play the familiar attacking midfield role just behind the striker. Instead, Alonso plans to deploy him deeper in midfield to be more involved in ball circulation. The aim is to allow the 22-year-old midfielder to have more touches, contribute to build-up play, while still maintaining his ability to penetrate the box—his strength since joining Madrid in 2023.
Before suffering the shoulder injury and undergoing surgery in July, Bellingham played all six matches under Alonso at the FIFA Club World Cup, proving he remains a key player. However, with Arda Guler impressing early in the season, Bellingham’s return means he must work harder to secure his place.
This role change also reflects Alonso’s football philosophy. The Spanish coach aims to build a midfield balanced between strength, control, and creativity. Valverde brings energy and pressing ability, Tchouameni provides defensive cover from distance, while Bellingham is expected to be the perfect link between attack and defense.
With his skill and accumulated experience, Bellingham is capable of adapting. Yet, the challenge is significant as he needs to adjust his playing tempo and move more intelligently instead of focusing solely on attacking and finishing. Success in this role would mark a step forward in becoming a more complete midfielder, similar to how Luka Modric evolved at Real Madrid.
Los Blancos fans eagerly await the English star’s comeback. Bellingham is expected not only to help Real Madrid maintain their strength in La Liga but also to be a decisive factor in their quest for this season’s Champions League title.
