Manchester United’s £18 million signing Senna Ramses impressed in his debut. Despite waiting a month before his first Premier League game, he was steady throughout, confidently handling crosses and making two outstanding saves, contributing to the team’s first clean sheet this season. After the victory celebration, Ramses kissed the Manchester United badge.
Ruben Amorin explained the reason for giving Ramses his debut now: “This is part of the regular rotation; every player must be ready to play. We need to win, every opponent is different, and the team must find the best traits to secure victory.”
It is reported that the Manchester United coaching staff and players have been impressed by Ramses’ positive attitude in training. The 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper has been doing extra fitness work and stayed behind after regular sessions to practice his distribution. In the Sunderland match, he demonstrated the results of his training by completing 33 long passes. This likely influenced Amorin’s decision to play more long balls against Sunderland—so far this season, no Manchester United goalkeeper has attempted so many long passes in a single match.
Ramses is said to have found a house in Manchester and adapted quickly to his new life. The coaching staff reportedly praise his attitude, noting he is the first to arrive at training and the last to leave. While this is a common way to express a player’s dedication, it’s clear not everyone can always be the earliest or latest. Similarly, new United striker Shesko has received comparable praise for his training attitude, which has greatly improved his fitness after he suffered cramps early in the season during the League Cup match against League Two side Grimsby.
Another Manchester United goalkeeper, Alty Baindil, embraced Ramses after the team’s win. Old Trafford fans were pleased with the new keeper’s first performance, with the West Stand even singing: “Are you Peter Schmeichel in disguise?”
However, Manchester United manager Amorin cautioned Ramses and the fans against becoming complacent, overambitious, or careless, emphasizing that the real challenge is still ahead. Many United players started strong and received praise early on but then sharply declined, such as the departed Garnacho and the bench-bound Kobe Meno.
“I think he appeared confident in his first match, but it’s important that his teammates help Senna perform well because everyone stayed focused and made few mistakes,” Amorin said. “When Senna arrived, Alty was the first choice, so you can understand he needed time to adapt to a new country, new training methods, and the huge pressure goalkeepers face here.”
He added, “Before Senna’s first start, he had to be fully prepared. But now he has only played one match; he needs to keep working hard and stay ready. At our club, the situation becomes very tough if even a small problem arises.”
Amorin also declined to confirm who the current first-choice goalkeeper at Manchester United is. “Senna did well and gave the whole team confidence. It’s a good day, not a perfect day, but winning like this without conceding is very important for our team,” the Red Devils’ coach stated.
Manchester United is still rumored to want to sign a new goalkeeper, but Ramses can change Amorin’s and the club’s plans by delivering strong performances match after match.
