British media unexpectedly speaks out on FIFA’s sanction against Malaysia

Sky Sports, a top sports broadcaster in the UK, surprisingly reacted to FIFA’s penalty imposed on Malaysia.

News from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) issued penalties against the Malaysian national team as well as their football association (FAM) which quickly spread beyond Southeast Asia and attracted global media attention.

Recently, Sky Sports, the UK’s premier sports channel, suddenly commented on the incident. In a post shared on social media platform X, Sky Sports published a statement reacting to FAM’s alleged fraud in the naturalization process of seven players. Specifically, Sky Sports announced: "The Malaysian Football Association is accused of falsifying nationality documents to enable seven foreign-born players to qualify for the national team."

The response from this leading British sports channel shows the issue has become a hot topic worldwide, not just regionally.

Previously, FIFA accused FAM of lacking transparency during the naturalization paperwork process for seven players in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, including the June match against Vietnam.

One of FIFA’s notable penalties is a one-year ban on the seven players and a fine imposed on FAM. This is the first sanction FIFA has issued since launching the investigation; however, FIFA did not apply the 0-3 forfeiture for two matches in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, including the 4-0 win over Vietnam.

Immediately after receiving FIFA’s sanction, FAM quickly responded, stating it will file an appeal to defend the reputation of the accused players. FAM emphasized that the evidence presented by FIFA is “insufficient to conclude any violation.”

After FIFA’s official ruling, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Disciplinary Committee will review the case details before deciding on final measures against FAM.
