Coach Jurgen Klopp takes on a new role after 16 months away from Liverpool

The ex-Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has formally taken up a new role within the football community.

Since parting ways with Liverpool after the 2023/24 season, Jurgen Klopp has not returned to coaching. Over his nine years leading the Merseyside club, the German tactician secured a total of eight major trophies, including the 2019 Champions League, 2019 FIFA Club World Cup, 2019 UEFA Super Cup, 2019–20 Premier League, 2021–22 FA Cup, two EFL Cups in 2021–22 and 2023–24, as well as the 2022 FA Community Shield.

He was also the one who ended Liverpool’s three-decade-long wait for a domestic title by guiding the club to the championship of the Premier League in 2020.

Since leaving Anfield, Klopp’s future has been widely discussed, with many speculating about his return to coaching. Last year, it was reported that Klopp took on the role of Global Football Director at the Red Bull Group, which owns clubs such as RB Leipzig, New York Red Bulls, and Red Bull Salzburg. In this capacity, he is believed to act as a strategic advisor and oversee coaching development across the club network.

However, whether Klopp will soon return to coaching remains uncertain. In an in-depth interview with The Athletic last month, the German manager revealed that he “does not miss” the intense pace of top-level coaching at all.

When asked about a possible comeback, Klopp said: “No one knows. I am already 58 years old. If I come back at 65, people will say: ‘He said he would never do it again!’ Sorry, at that time I was 100% sure of that. But now, I really don’t miss anything.”

Nevertheless, Klopp has recently taken on an additional responsibility in football alongside his role at Red Bull. This week, the German Football League (DFL) announced that he will join a new expert group tasked with advising on “training and integrating young talents.”

Klopp will be responsible for the development of young players in Germany.

According to the DFL announcement: “Theexpert group will focus on training, developing, and integrating young players, as well as proposing measures to improve the standards and structures of clubs. Initial results are expected to be presented at executive board meetings in spring 2026 before wider discussions with 36 professional clubs.”

Notably, Sami Khedira — former Real Madrid midfielder and 2014 World Cup winner with Germany — is also part of this committee. Two senior figures, Marc Lenz, CEO of the DFL, and Andreas Rettig, CEO of the DFB (German Football Association), are involved in coordinating the group.
