Coach Ruben Amorim does not dare to 'bet the future' with MU

Ahead of the big clash with Liverpool at Anfield, Manchester United's coach Ruben Amorim openly admitted that in football, "no one can predict tomorrow."

Last week, in an interview with The Times, owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe stated that Manchester United would need at least three years for Amorim to make a clear impact at Old Trafford. This statement somewhat eased the pressure following the Red Devils' disappointing run. However, the Portuguese coach believes football cannot be predicted by long-term plans.

“It's good to hear that, but he often texts me encouragement after every match. Jim, I, and everyone know that football never follows a predetermined script,” Amorim shared. “The most important thing is the next game. Even the owners can't control what will happen tomorrow in football, so how could I dare to bet on a distant future like that?”

Since moving from Sporting Lisbon last November, Amorim has only helped MU win 10 out of 34 Premier League matches. The Red Devils have yet to win two consecutive games and have never risen above ninth place in the standings this season.

CEO Omar Berrada admitted that Amorim's adaptation process in the Premier League “has taken much longer than expected”. This has caused fans’ confidence to decline further, especially as MU is about to enter a series of matches where they have frequently disappointed over the past two seasons.

Amorim said he does not sense any confusion within the Carrington training center. However, the 40-year-old strategist affirmed that the greatest pressure comes from himself, and sometimes he even prefers Ratcliffe not to show public patience.

“It's good to hear words of support because it helps fans understand that the management knows time is needed for rebuilding. But I don't like it because it can give people the impression that we have plenty of time to fix mistakes,” Amorim said.

“I don't want that feeling to exist at this club. The pressure I put on the team and myself is much greater than from outside. At big clubs, you have to prove your worth every weekend.”

With the current poor results, Amorim's future at Old Trafford remains a big question. Despite receiving support commitments from the owners, the Portuguese coach understands that trust in football is always fragile, especially as Manchester United prepares for their 100th historic match against their archrival Liverpool, where every mistake is magnified.
