Barca star opposes club's decision

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong openly criticizes the club and La Liga's choice to hold the match against Villarreal in the United States, arguing that it is unfair to the players.

Midfielder Frenkie de Jong, Barcelona’s vice-captain, has once again expressed his dissatisfaction with La Liga’s decision to move the Villarreal vs. Barcelona game to Miami, USA, scheduled for December 20.

In a recent interview, De Jong stated his opposition to playing abroad, saying it affects players' physical condition and creates an unfair competitive environment.

De Jong said: “I don’t like it. I understand clubs want to grow their brand and generate revenue, but from my perspective, this isn’t the right way. Players have to travel too much, which impacts performance. This was supposed to be our away game, but now it’s at a neutral venue. That’s unfair.”

Earlier in October, the Dutch midfielder had already opposed this plan, and even after renewing his contract with Barcelona, he maintained his stance: “My opinion hasn’t changed. We are players and ultimately must play wherever we are asked, but that doesn’t mean I agree with it.”

Barcelona president Joan Laporta stated he “respects De Jong’s opinion” but emphasized that expanding the club’s presence in North America is essential for its global growth strategy. Besides branding, the substantial revenue from this match is also a key reason La Liga is determined to bring Spanish football to the US.

According to announcements from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and UEFA, this plan has been approved, marking the first time in history a La Liga match will be held in the United States.

Coach Hansi Flick also expressed his displeasure over Barcelona having to travel more than 7,200 km mid-season: “My players are unhappy, and so am I. But La Liga has made the decision, and we have to comply,” the German coach said.

The trip to the US is expected to strain Barcelona’s schedule further, as they will soon fly to Saudi Arabia to participate in the Spanish Super Cup starting on January 7, 2026.
