After 39 days in charge, a Premier League manager has been dismissed again.

Only 39 days after taking charge, Ange Postecoglou was dismissed by Nottingham Forest, ending one of the shortest managerial spells in Premier League history.

The decision was made immediately following a 0-3 defeat to Chelsea at City Ground. This marked Forest’s sixth consecutive loss under the Australian coach, dropping them to 17th in the league table.

Less than 20 minutes after the final whistle, the club released a brief statement: "Nottingham Forest Football Club confirms that due to a disappointing sequence of results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect. The club will not provide further comment at this time."

Postecoglou was dismissed

With a record of six defeats and two draws, Postecoglou became the shortest-serving manager to be dismissed mid-season in the Premier League era.

Earlier, Forest had also parted ways with Nuno Espirito Santo after just two matches. Postecoglou was expected to introduce a modern attacking style, but those hopes quickly collapsed. He started with a loss to Arsenal, followed by a shocking Carabao Cup elimination by Swansea despite leading 2-0.

The low point was a home defeat to Midtjylland in the Europa League, witnessed by chairman Evangelos Marinakis, which provoked protests from the City Ground stands. Consecutive losses to Newcastle and Chelsea afterward drained the board’s confidence.

Postecoglou had helped Tottenham win the Europa League last season, yet was still dismissed due to a 17th place finish in the Premier League, a result deemed "unacceptable." At Forest, he was charged with securing a Champions League spot next season, but an eight-match winless run extinguished all hopes.

Before the Chelsea match, Postecoglou emotionally said: "Maybe I’m not the right fit. At every previous club, the story ended the same way, with a trophy if I had more time. But time is a luxury in modern football."

However, Forest’s owners lacked the patience to wait for a miracle. Chairman Marinakis took action, opening the door for a new manager with a more pragmatic approach to try to save the season.

With 17th place and just one win above the relegation zone, Nottingham Forest faces a survival challenge. Postecoglou’s era ended quietly, but the attacking philosophy he left behind might still be a meaningful legacy for the "Reds" in their journey to reclaim their identity.
