Coach Ruben Amorim confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will continue to take penalties for Manchester United, despite the Portuguese midfielder missing two penalties this season.
Since the start of the season, Bruno Fernandes has missed two crucial penalties, against Fulham and Brentford respectively. At Craven Cottage, his miss cost MU a win, resulting in just a draw. In the match versus Brentford, Bruno failed from the spot when the score was 2-1, allowing the opponents to come back and seal a 3-1 victory.
Despite facing heavy criticism from fans, Coach Ruben Amorim remains steadfast in his stance ahead of the Liverpool game. The Portuguese manager briefly stated: “Bruno is the designated taker. He has scored many goals. If necessary, we will make changes, but I fully believe Bruno will resolve the issue.”
Bruno Fernandes had previously converted a penalty successfully in the 3-2 win over Burnley last August. Before this season, the last time he missed a Premier League penalty was in December 2023 against Chelsea.
Amorim added: “I know it’s not easy for him. But I believe Bruno has taken around 70 penalties in his career and missed only about 8, including 2 under my management. That frustrates me, but Bruno is very confident. He is training hard. He understands everyone is watching how he takes penalties. And he will be ready.”
Bruno Fernandes is almost certain to start when MU visit Anfield, where they have not won since 2016. Given United’s shaky start to the season, a positive result against Liverpool would be a crucial morale boost to stabilize the dressing room.
While Bruno Fernandes has absolute trust, the futures of some other players remain uncertain. Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee are still struggling to secure starting spots, sparking rumors they might leave Old Trafford in the January transfer window. Coach Amorim quickly reassured:
“This club is always noisy. There are rumors, players wanting game time, the World Cup coming up. There are agents always listening in. I understand all that. But they are still our players, and I need everyone for a successful season.”
