Former English football star claims he 'returned from the dead' after his heart stopped and he was in a coma for 18 days

English football icon Paul Gascoigne, often referred to as "Gazza," stunned fans by disclosing that he was clinically dead for 18 days while in an induced coma at an alcohol rehab center in Arizona, USA, 12 years ago.

At 58, the former Newcastle, Tottenham, and Everton player opened up about his brush with death in an interview with The Mirror during the promotion of his autobiography "Eight." "Reflecting on what happened in Arizona, when my heart stopped during surgery, it was a truly horrifying moment," Gascoigne said. "The doctors injected directly into my heart to save my life. When I regained consciousness, I was still dazed from the medication but alert enough to call my family and say, 'It’s okay, I pulled through, I survived.'"

Before falling into the coma, Gascoigne had quit drinking abruptly (cold turkey)—a shock to a body already dependent on alcohol. This led to his critical hospitalization, where doctors had to induce a deep coma to stabilize him. He remained unconscious for 18 days and only woke when doctors confirmed his heartbeat had returned to normal.

This incident sparked false rumors of his death that spread across England at the time. Gascoigne recalled: "When I returned to Newcastle, I met a woman on the street. She froze and nearly fainted. She said, 'I thought you were dead.' I replied, 'I’m not dead, just nearly.' She probably thought she had seen a ghost when she saw me."
