Rio Ferdinand revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo often stays silent in the WhatsApp group of former Man Utd players because he is cautious about his role as a journalist.
Although he left Man Utd long ago, Ronaldo still keeps in touch with many former teammates, including ex-defender Ferdinand. The two even had a chance to talk after Ronaldo launched his personal YouTube channel last year.
A group of Man Utd stars, including Ronaldo and Ferdinand, remain connected via WhatsApp, but according to Ferdinand, the Portuguese superstar at Al Nassr usually stays quiet.
Ferdinand shared with The Times: "It's funny because now Cristiano calls me a journalist. He messaged: 'Now I can't say much in the United WhatsApp group because Rio is there too. Rio, the journalist!'"
Ronaldo had a brilliant six-year spell at Man Utd during his first stint from 2003 to 2009, winning numerous titles including three Premier Leagues, one Champions League, and a Club World Cup. Man Utd was a crucial stepping stone that helped him rise to world-class status, and at Old Trafford, Ronaldo established himself as one of the best players globally.
CR7 also won his first Ballon d'Or among his total awards while playing for the club. In summer 2021, Ronaldo returned to Manchester, but this comeback was not smooth, and the contract between both parties ended in November 2022.
In a conversation with Ferdinand on his personal YouTube channel last year, Ronaldo shared the secret that helps him maintain his form and continue shining for both club and country despite being in the final stage of his career.
When asked what keeps him motivated to play, Ronaldo replied: "Last night I had dinner with my family and my mother, and we recalled some moments from the Euro finals. It’s the passion for football that drives me. I’m addicted to football, addicted to scoring goals, and I want to play at a high level even at this age because I love it."
At 40 years old, Ronaldo still maintains excellent performance for both Al Nassr and the Portuguese national team. He started the 2025/26 season impressively, scoring five goals in the domestic league after five appearances and six goals in all competitions.
Ronaldo is a key figure helping Al Nassr maintain a perfect winning record in the Saudi Pro League, continuing to lead the table by two points. During the October international break, the veteran forward scored twice in Portugal’s 2-2 draw with Hungary in World Cup qualifiers, also setting a new record.
His two goals against Hungary allowed the Portuguese superstar to surpass former Guatemalan player Carlos Ruiz with 41 goals in World Cup qualifiers, making him the highest scorer in history. To date, the 1985-born player has 143 international goals, and his total career goals for club and country have reached 948 after a stunning strike against Al Fateh in the Saudi Pro League last weekend. With only 52 goals left to reach 1,000, Ronaldo is closer than ever to achieving this ambitious dream before concluding his glorious career.
