Former star Wayne Rooney believes Mohamed Salah should consider leaving Liverpool in the upcoming transfer window, as the Egyptian striker’s form has significantly declined under coach Arne Slot.
Speaking on BBC’s The Wayne Rooney Show, the Manchester United legend gave a candid assessment of Salah’s current situation: “Salah has played too many games over the past few years. He’s a key player carrying enormous pressure, but it now seems he’s starting to slow down. I wouldn’t be surprised if he leaves the club in January or possibly next summer.”
At 33 years old, Mohamed Salah is going through the toughest phase since joining Liverpool. The Egyptian star has scored only four goals in nine matches this season and has gone seven consecutive games without scoring from open play — his longest drought since arriving at Anfield in 2017. Salah’s dip in form coincides with Liverpool’s run of four straight defeats, including a 1-2 loss to Manchester United last weekend.
Rooney continued to express admiration but also acknowledged that Salah’s peak years might be behind him: “I think Salah is still among the top five players in the Premier League, but perhaps his time has come to an end. Sometimes you don’t want to admit it, but eventually you realize it’s time to move on.”
The former England captain also highlighted reasons why Salah and some other Liverpool key players are struggling: “I think Liverpool rely too heavily on Salah, Van Dijk, and Trent. When others haven’t yet adapted to Arne Slot’s system, these players have to carry too much, which is wearing them out.”
Salah’s future was a hot topic throughout the summer of 2024, as he received a massive offer from Saudi Arabia but ultimately chose to stay and sign a new two-year contract. However, if his form continues to decline, leaving Liverpool may only be a matter of time. According to sources in England, several Arab clubs remain ready to make a big bid to sign him in 2026.
Salah remains a Liverpool icon, with over 200 goals and multiple major trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League. However, as the team undergoes a generational transition, coach Arne Slot is forced to place trust in younger players like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak — which has gradually reduced Salah’s role.
Rooney stressed that he was not criticizing but merely stating a realistic view: “I really enjoy watching Salah play; he’s a fantastic player, but there are times when you have to ask yourself: how much longer can you maintain that level? I think it’s time for him to seek a new challenge.”
Rooney’s remarks immediately sparked controversy among fans. Some agreed that Salah has reached his final stage at Liverpool, while many supporters still believe the Egyptian star has the resilience to bounce back. Regardless of his future, Rooney’s comments have ignited a fresh debate about the right time for Salah to close the most successful chapter of his career at Anfield.
