Laos plans to use a team largely made up of U22 players to face Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying match, providing their youth with competitive opportunities and gearing up for SEA Games 33.
The Laos national team will take the field with mostly U22 players in the return match against Vietnam in Group F of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, scheduled for November 18 at home. This strategic move by coach Ha Hyeok Jun is designed to offer young talents match experience while also preparing the squad for the upcoming SEA Games 33 later this year.
After four matches in Group F, Laos has secured only one win and suffered three losses, officially eliminating them from advancing. Instead of focusing on results, the coaching staff has chosen to give young players a chance to prove themselves in an international competitive environment. Experts view this as a long-term investment step, helping U22 players get accustomed early to the intensity and pressure at the national team level.
Notably, during the draw for the men’s football event at SEA Games 33 on October 19, Laos U22 was placed in Group B alongside Vietnam U22 and Malaysia U22. This group is considered very challenging, as the other two teams are among the strongest in Southeast Asia.
Therefore, allowing the young squad to test themselves early against Vietnam in the Asian Cup qualifiers is seen as a “real test” for the Laos team before entering the regional competition.
Since taking charge of the Laos teams, Korean coach Ha Hyeok Jun has focused on building a strong physical foundation, pressing ability, and modern tactical thinking for his players. His goal is to change Laos football’s image as a “stepping stone” team and encourage young players to compete with confidence and national pride.
Thus, the upcoming match against Vietnam holds not only competitive significance but also serves as a measure of the resilience and ambition of the Laos U22 generation. Coach Ha Hyeok Jun hopes his team will play with determination, showcase a new spirit, and kick off their journey toward a successful SEA Games in Thailand.
