British outlets verify that Manchester United’s manager Ruben Amorim is ready to permit striker Joshua Zirkzee to leave next year. During the 2024 summer transfer window, United paid €42.5 million (£36.5 million) to acquire Zirkzee from Bologna in Serie A, with the club aiming to recover nearly the full cost upon his sale.

Zirkzee netted 11 goals in Serie A, but after joining Manchester United, he found it hard to settle, scoring just 3 goals in the Premier League. The 24-year-old Dutch forward later showed his value playing as a number 10, but currently, that role is no longer what Amorim requires.
At present, Manchester United has players like Cunha, Mbemou, and Mason Mount capable of playing as number 10, and Amad Diallo can also fill that position. Even captain Bruno Fernandes has had to drop back to midfield in a 3-4-3 formation, and Cunha occasionally comes off the bench, leaving Zirkzee with very limited opportunities.
Statistics reveal that Zirkzee’s playing time this season ranks third from the bottom among Manchester United’s first-team players, with only youngster Eden Haven and Tyler Fredrickson having less. Unfortunately, André Onana, who left United last month on loan to Trabzonspor, has logged more minutes in nearly two months away than Zirkzee.
Furthermore, this player signed by Ten Hag missed preseason training due to injury, making competition with teammates even tougher. Since recovering, his playing time has been minimal—never starting, with just four appearances totaling less than two full matches. In the match against Liverpool, Amorim started Cunha as a “false nine” and brought on the new striker Shesko, signed for £85 million, while Zirkzee only appeared during the post-match celebrations.

According to "Manchester World," Amorim believes Zirkzee lacks the necessary qualities to be a long-term striker for Manchester United. “Amorim says every player gets chances, but even when Shesko didn’t start, Zirkzee still didn’t get any opportunities,” explained Richie Fey. “When not playing with a striker, United employs Cunha, Mbemou, and Mason Mount in a strikerless system, possibly the backup plan this season. The manager doesn’t see Zirkzee as a perfect number nine and thinks he lacks a distinct tactical impact.”
There is no doubt that Zirkzee’s future at Old Trafford looks bleak, especially without European competition this season. To boost his chances of playing in the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, the Dutch international plans to request a transfer from Manchester United in January.
The British Daily Mirror reports that Zirkzee believes leaving is in everyone’s best interest. He is eager for more playing time, as he still hopes to be selected for the Dutch national team. Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman told Zirkzee that to qualify for next year’s World Cup squad, he must play more matches to be considered.
Recently, Amorim publicly praised Zirkzee and Cody Meno, saying he needs all his players, but privately he has agreed to Zirkzee’s transfer. It is said Amorim told Manchester United’s management to entertain offers for Zirkzee, whether permanent or loan deals. The player is not short of suitors, with staying in the Premier League also an option, as relegation-threatened West Ham United is interested in signing him.

However, if the right opportunity arises, Zirkzee wouldn’t mind returning to Serie A or moving to La Liga. Roma in Serie A reportedly want to end Evan Ferguson’s loan and bring in Zirkzee instead. Under Gasperini’s coaching, Roma is performing well this season, sitting in the top four and just one point behind the leaders. La Liga clubs Real Betis and Sevilla are also competing to sign Zirkzee.
