An English football club is about to face a severe points deduction

Sheffield Wednesday is facing a significant points deduction, adding further hardship to the financially struggling Championship side.

The Sheffield Wednesday club is in a serious crisis as it prepares to receive a major points deduction, another harsh setback for the financially exhausted Championship team.

The team nicknamed “The Owls” has been dealing with financial difficulties since the end of last season, stemming from owner Dejphon Chansiri’s failure to sell the club. Over the past seven months, Sheffield Wednesday’s players and staff have experienced salary delays on five occasions. In June, the club was even banned from making transfers for three consecutive windows.

Under strict transfer ban rules, Wednesday is prohibited from paying any fees, wages, or bonuses for deals. Therefore, the only defensive signing they managed this summer was the loan of young defender Harry Amass from Manchester United. The club even had to request special permission from the EFL to urgently loan goalkeepers Ethan Horvath and Joe Lumley after first-choice keeper Pierce Charles suffered an injury.

Six players, including forwards Josh Windass and Michael Smith, applied to leave the team during preseason. However, captain and star player Barry Bannan chose to extend his contract. Coach Danny Rohl also left before the season started, and currently Wednesday sits at the bottom of the Championship table with just one win from eleven matches.

Under new coach Henrik Pedersen, “The Owls” have been forced to rely heavily on young academy players, most of whom lack top-level experience. Meanwhile, fans have boycotted matches at Hillsborough in protest against owner Chansiri, who is accused of demanding an excessively high price for the club compared to its real value.

According to the Sheffield Star, many potential investors have “given up in frustration” after negotiations with the Thai businessman, citing a “confusing negotiation process and unclear pricing.”

Wednesday’s crisis escalated last week when news emerged that the club faced a legal threat over approximately £1 million in unpaid taxes owed to the UK tax authority (HMRC).

Now, according to court documents obtained by Reuters , Sheffield Wednesday has officially filed for bankruptcy, which means they will face a heavy points deduction under EFL rules.

Under EFL regulations, any club declaring bankruptcy is docked 12 points. Derby County was the last club to face this penalty in 2021. If this scenario repeats, Sheffield Wednesday’s points tally will drop to -6 in the Championship standings, assuming they do not earn any more points before then.

Journalist Mike Keegan from the Daily Mailreports that Lancashire-based restructuring firm Begbies Traynor will be appointed to manage the club’s entire bankruptcy process.
