The clash with Brighton will be Bruno Fernandes' 300th game for Manchester United. Despite this milestone, the 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder has faced constant transfer rumors in recent years. English reports reveal that if he departs, the maximum fee United can get is £57 million because his release clause has become valid.

The club has already presented Fernandes with a special jersey bearing the number "300" to honor his contributions to Manchester United. The Sun reported that this milestone might not have happened had he accepted offers from three Saudi Professional League teams this summer. Fernandes declined these lucrative proposals, as he aims to lead United to Premier League and Champions League glory.
Fernandes confirmed that Al Hilal offered him a contract worth over £100 million during the summer transfer window, and he sought advice from Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been playing in Saudi Arabia for years. While participating in a post-season commercial event in Malaysia, Fernandes disclosed Al Hilal’s offer to Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada. After discussing with his wife Ana Pinho, he chose to stay, hoping to end United's Premier League title drought.
“As I have always said, I feel very happy at Manchester United,” Fernandes explained. “I still have the desire to fulfill my dreams. However, regarding my future at the club, I cannot reveal any conclusions now. I’ve seen many reports claiming I’ve agreed to a transfer for next season, but even if the club has such an agreement, it certainly wasn’t with me. I haven’t had any formal talks with anyone. But I can confirm that some parties have contacted me, expressing strong interest in signing me next year.”
Regarding whether he will leave next year, Fernandes said he will decide after the World Cup. “Personally, no one has discussed this topic with me yet. My agent knows how I work, and if he talks to me, it will be after the World Cup. Until then, I won’t engage in any negotiations. I told my wife: ‘I received an invitation from Saudi Arabia.’ She asked me: ‘Have you achieved all your goals at Manchester United?’ She knows I haven’t. We don’t know if we will succeed, but if we don’t try, we definitely won’t.”

According to Fernandes, CEO Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox said the club would not block a transfer request, but they also urged him to stay. “They expressed their wish for me to remain at Manchester United, but if I truly want to leave, they wouldn’t refuse, especially since the transfer fee offer was very high. Al Hilal reportedly offered between £80 million and £100 million.”
Fernandes revealed that coach Rúben Amorim firmly rejected the idea of him leaving. “I spoke with Amorim, and he told me: ‘No, we still need more players to help you all become a stronger team, so I don’t want you to leave. Because if we bring in new signings but lose you, that would still be a loss.’ Obviously, everyone understands my goal is to lead Manchester United to Premier League and Champions League titles! But whether I can achieve that, I cannot guarantee. Otherwise, I’d be very happy because that would mean United could win those trophies in the next three years. Unfortunately, football is unpredictable.”
Cristiano Ronaldo’s club Al Nassr also contacted Fernandes during the summer window. Their coach, Jorge Jesus, was Fernandes’ former manager at Sporting Lisbon and helped him become a star. Fernandes confirmed he discussed the Saudi offer with Ronaldo: “I talked with Cristiano about my current situation and the invitation from Saudi Arabia. I won’t reveal specifics, but we discussed it. Cristiano has his views, which are very important to me given his extensive experience. Ultimately, the decision rests with me and the club.”
The Sun reported that Fernandes' contract extension with Manchester United includes a clause activating after two years, starting from the 2026/27 season. At that point, any club outside the Premier League can trigger the release clause by offering £57 million. This means Saudi or other European giants could acquire the Portuguese midfielder at a lower price.

Fernandes said the club he most hopes to play for in the future is his former team Sporting Lisbon: “If given the chance, I want to return to Portugal and would prioritize Sporting.” He added, “But at Manchester United, we feel at home. My family also says the house we live in now feels more like home than our place in Portugal.”
