After the heated clash in El Clasico, midfielder Frenkie de Jong expressed his opinion and stood up for his junior teammate Lamine Yamal amid criticism from Real Madrid.
After the tense El Clasico match at Santiago Bernabeu, midfielder Frenkie de Jong commented on the chaotic altercation between players of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The classic match ended with a 2-1 victory for Real Madrid, but after the final whistle, the atmosphere suddenly escalated as a group of Real Madrid players, including Dani Carvajal and Thibaut Courtois, approached Barcelona’s promising youngster Lamine Yamal to confront him.
Speaking on Movistar, De Jong expressed his dissatisfaction with the behavior of Real Madrid players: “I didn’t see the entire incident, but when the referee blew the final whistle, I saw many Real players rushing towards Lamine. I think that was a bit excessive. If they had something to say, they could have done it behind the scenes, no need to make a big deal on the pitch,” De Jong stated.
The Dutch midfielder also emphasized that rumors about Yamal’s remarks were exaggerated: “People say Lamine accused Madrid of cheating or something, but I never heard him say that. He’s very young and doesn’t deserve such criticism.”
Besides defending his junior, De Jong also candidly assessed Barcelona’s performance: “In the first half, we handled the ball poorly and allowed Madrid to exploit spaces. In the second half, the whole team played better but still lacked sharpness in creating clear chances.”
According to De Jong, Carvajal, one of the aggressors towards Yamal, should have chosen a different approach: “If Carvajal wanted to give feedback, he could have spoken privately with Lamine. Provoking gestures on the pitch only make things tenser,” he added.
The incident after El Clasico continues to spark debate in the Spanish media, especially regarding how veteran players treat young talents like Yamal. However, De Jong’s calm and measured remarks demonstrate unity within Barcelona and a spirit of protecting the club’s next generation from Catalonia.
