3-0! 8-7! U17 Women's World Cup Update: China’s Women’s Team Falls to Brazil, and the U.S. Also Shockingly Eliminated

On October 29th Beijing time, the U17 Women's World Cup Round of 16 matches began in full swing. Two matches have just ended with the latest updates: Brazil’s women’s team easily eliminated China 3-0, and the U.S., a top contender, was surprisingly knocked out by the Netherlands 8-7 in penalties. Thus, Brazil and the Netherlands secured their spots in the last eight!

Brazil played against China. Two second-place teams from their groups clashed. Facing Brazil’s strong physicality, our tactical execution faltered. Combined with lineup issues, we failed to control the game, lost possession, had no midfield interceptions, and defensive errors were frequent, allowing Brazil to break through easily. Within three minutes, Brazil scored the opening goal. Trailing, China’s play became chaotic, unable to keep pace with Brazil’s speed. The second half included a tough “black five minutes” where two more goals were conceded quickly, ending in a 0-3 defeat. This match exposed our true level; China’s women’s team could not make history by reaching the quarterfinals, which is disappointing—no miracle this time!

The U.S. faced the Netherlands. The U.S. women’s team is a global powerhouse and a title favorite, having dominated the group stage with three straight wins and topping their group. In the knockout round, they met the Netherlands, who finished third in their group. The U.S. was expected to win, but the outcome was surprising. Early in the match, the Netherlands struck first with a quick goal in the third minute, setting a perfect start. The U.S. fought back hard and finally equalized in the second half. Neither side scored in regular time, ending 0-0 after 90 minutes. The match went to a tense penalty shootout, where the Netherlands showed superior skill and accuracy, winning 8-7 overall. This upset eliminated the U.S. and allowed the Netherlands to advance to the quarterfinals—truly a massive surprise and one of the biggest upsets!

With both China and the U.S. eliminated, all four teams from Group C have now exited the tournament. Ecuador and Norway did not even advance from the group stage, indicating that this group’s overall level was quite weak. Given China’s limited strength, reaching the last 16 is already an acceptable achievement!
