Seven players have become undisputed starters for Manchester United, while Shesko’s role remains uncertain! Surprisingly, one position lacks a suitable candidate.

Ruben Amorim has achieved three straight Premier League victories, with his tactical changes making the team’s play quicker and more straightforward. The £200 million spent on new players this summer has injected fresh energy into the squad. Many starting roles at Manchester United have become relatively stable, leading to fewer lineup rotations at the start of the season. The squads fielded against Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton remained largely consistent.

Data shows that Manchester United experienced significant lineup changes early in the season, with 20 starting player adjustments, ranking fifth among Premier League teams. Currently, according to "Jingji Net," Amorim has confidently identified starters in at least seven positions. However, some roles remain unclear, especially the left wing-back spot, where neither Patrick Dogu, Diego Leon, nor Diogo Dalot have been convincing.

Goalkeeper Senna Lamens is the latest player to secure a starting position, and his status has quickly solidified. The 23-year-old Belgian recently became the first-choice keeper in the last three matches and is likely to retain the number one spot for the rest of the season. His saves are reliable, his decision-making decisive, effectively limiting opposing attackers, even producing miraculous stops in one-on-one situations. He communicates well, keeping defenders focused. Amorim’s switch to long passes from the goalkeeper has also freed Lamens from being trapped by opponents’ high pressing.

Center-back De Ligt has started every Premier League match for Manchester United this season, as has Luke Shaw. However, once Lisandro Martinez recovers from injury, Shaw’s position as left center-back could be challenged. This threat does not apply to De Ligt, who anchors the middle of the three-center-back formation. Interestingly, since his debut at Ajax in the 2016/17 season, De Ligt has had a different head coach at the start of each season compared to the previous one; he hopes next season will be different. De Ligt excels in aerial duels, and although his coverage across the pitch isn’t as extensive as Reni Yoro’s, Manchester United’s current style allows him to focus on his strengths.

Amorim has essentially fixed Amad Diallo as the right wing-back this season to utilize his dribbling skills. Initially, Amad’s role overlapped somewhat with the left-footed Mbemou, but they have gradually adapted to each other’s rhythms. Generally, Mbemou tends to drift more centrally, leaving the right flank to Amad. Currently, the only circumstance that might prevent Amad from starting for Manchester United is the Africa Cup of Nations at the end of the year.

Whether Bruno Fernandes has fully adapted to Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation or not, as Manchester United’s captain, his starting spot has always been secure. The 31-year-old Portuguese ironman’s stats have declined somewhat this season compared to before, including missing two consecutive penalties in the Premier League. Bruno remains the team’s core, but he no longer needs to carry the entire burden of organizing, scoring, and assisting alone.

Amorim openly stated that Casemiro is a role model for everyone at Manchester United. When the coaching change happened, the Brazilian defensive midfielder was once discarded but has now become indispensable. The "Big Tiger" not only protects United’s midfield from counterattacks but also initiates offense himself, scoring through powerful long shots and headers.

Manchester United competes only in the Premier League, and Amorim’s defensive formation adjustment to 5-4-1 benefits Casemiro, who is no longer isolated against the league’s fast attackers. Approaching 34, Casemiro may never return to his 2022/23 form, but he remains the team’s best defensive midfielder.

Mbemou has been praised by Amorim as a highly efficient machine, excelling in transition play. The 26-year-old Cameroonian winger has scored five goals and provided one assist, making him the team’s top scorer. His ball control near the opponent’s box is very intelligent, with balanced use of both feet, proving worth every penny of his £71 million transfer fee.

Cunha, who joined Manchester United for £62.5 million, once faced the risk of losing his starting spot due to Mason Mount’s performances. However, Mount’s injury gave Cunha another chance, and he demonstrated his value in the match against Liverpool. His ball control, positional awareness, and courageous style have made United’s attack more precise, aggressive, and decisive. This leaves Mount competing with striker Shesko for the final forward starting position, depending mainly on whether Amorim prefers a focal point or a more fluid attacking approach during matches.
