The Indonesian Football Association is said to be keeping a close watch on a Dutch player likened to Lionel Messi, readying the paperwork for his naturalization.
In recent years, the Indonesian national team has actively implemented a program to naturalize foreign-born players to improve their performance. The arrival of Dutch-origin players has proven effective, making the Indonesian national team more competitive in Asia and reaching the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers for the first time.
Although they did not secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup, the contributions of these foreign-born players left a significant impact. As a result, Garuda made history by advancing to the fourth qualifying round and automatically qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup.
In this context, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) continues to scout promising talents abroad. One notable name is Djenahro Nunumete, a young Maluku-born player raised in Groningen, the Netherlands. Although not widely known to the public, Djenahro possesses impressive abilities.
This left-footed player stands out with his wing attacks, agility, and exceptional individual skills. He currently plays for FC Emmen in the Dutch second division, Eerste Divisie, and this season has appeared in 10 matches across all competitions, contributing two assists.
Before joining FC Emmen, Djenahro shined with SC Heerenveen's U21 team, playing 32 matches, scoring six goals, and providing three assists. FC Emmen's technical director, Nico Haak, highly praises Djenahro's abilities, comparing his playing style to Lionel Messi due to his skillful left foot and ability to penetrate down the wing. “Djenahro is a versatile left-footed player who can operate in midfield or various positions on the left flank,” Haak said.
Haak also emphasized Djenahro's outstanding technique and agility compared to peers of his age. “He stands out for his skills and versatility, and we hope he continues to develop with the team,” he added. These compliments further confirm Djenahro as a special talent who could become a key pillar for the Indonesian national team. The flexible and agile playing style of this 2002-born star promises to bring diversity to Garuda’s attacking options.
Although PSSI has not officially confirmed the naturalization plan, Djenahro’s quality, European playing experience, and youth make him a strong candidate, promising to significantly strengthen Indonesia’s national team attack for important FIFA tournaments next year.
