Cristiano Ronaldo openly criticized Manchester United legend and former teammate Wayne Rooney during a conversation with journalist Piers Morgan.
Although Wayne Rooney played alongside Ronaldo for five years at Manchester United (2004–2009), he chose Messi when asked who the greatest player is. This seemed to upset Ronaldo when Piers Morgan brought it up in a recent interview.
In the teaser released on November 3rd, Morgan stated: “Wayne Rooney insists he doesn’t hate him, but still says Messi is better.”
Ronaldo, showing clear displeasure, replied: “That’s fine. But I disagree and I don’t want to be modest about it.”
The full details of the conversation will be revealed when the interview airs on the channel Piers Morgan Uncensored on November 4th. However, it’s clear Ronaldo does not agree with his former teammate’s choice.
Previously, Rooney shared his reason for choosing Messi during the program The Overlap: “I understand that everyone can choose either Messi or Ronaldo because they are both extraordinary players, perhaps the two greatest to have ever played.”
But when directly asked “Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?”, Rooney did not hesitate to answer: “Lionel Messi.”
“For me, Messi has a bit more finesse and spontaneity that I really like in a player, and that’s why I pick him.”
Throughout its glorious 147-year history, Manchester United has welcomed many of the greatest players ever to grace the pitch.
Over the years, names like Eric Cantona, George Best, and Sir Bobby Charlton have become icons of the “Red Devils” and English football in general.
However, in the Premier League era, the two most prominent and beloved figures are undoubtedly Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. Yet, it seems these former teammates don’t share the same view in the age-old football debate, and Ronaldo is clearly unhappy about that.
Journalist Piers Morgan has long asserted his belief that Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest player of all time. Although this is a personal and controversial topic, most fans agree that the “GOAT” race is mainly between Ronaldo and his longtime rival Lionel Messi.
