Trent Alexander-Arnold led the Real Madrid stars back to Anfield, laying flowers and writing a heartfelt letter in memory of their late teammate Diogo Jota – a loss that shocked both Liverpool and the football community.
On the evening of November 3rd, during his first return to Anfield since joining Real Madrid ahead of the Champions League clash between the two teams, Trent Alexander-Arnold made a touching gesture to honor his former friend and teammate Diogo Jota. The English defender led the Real Madrid players and coaching staff to place flowers at the main stand, where he had spent many years wearing the Liverpool jersey.
Jota passed away along with his 26-year-old brother Andre in a tragic car accident last July. Both died when the Lamborghini lost control after a tire burst on the highway. The incident shook the football world, and for Alexander-Arnold, it was a devastating shock as he had only recently left Liverpool weeks before the tragedy.
At Anfield, Trent placed a bouquet of red and white flowers and left a deeply emotional handwritten note: “My friend Diogo. Everyone misses you so much and will always love you. Memories of you and Andre will live forever. I smile whenever I think of you and will never forget the amazing moments we shared. Missing you every day. Love, Trent and family. Forever number 20. YNWA.”
Next to the flowers was a red PlayStation controller with the words “Forever champion 20. TAA,” referencing Jota’s endless passion for gaming. Coach Xabi Alonso, Dean Huijsen, and legend Emilio Butragueño were also present to pay their respects.
During 145 matches together at Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota helped the club win several major trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup. On social media, Trent shared his heartfelt feelings: “It’s hard to find the right words when your mind and heart can’t accept that someone you love is gone. When the pain eases, I want to remember Diogo with a big smile.”
The image of Trent Alexander-Arnold choked with emotion in front of Anfield’s stand moved Liverpool fans to tears. Could this be one of the most touching moments in European football this year?
