The ex-MU player is said to be weighing the option of coming back to the Premier League, even rejoining MU due to his club's financial challenges.
McTominay has become one of the key stars at Napoli. In his first season with the Naples club, the Scottish midfielder scored 12 goals, playing a major role in helping the Southern Italian team clinch the Serie A title.
At 29, McTominay is not only a crucial figure at the club but also an important player for the Scotland national team, often scoring decisive goals in the final moments. However, according to The Sun, tensions have started to emerge this season as Napoli currently sits third in the league standings.
A close source shared: “Scott loves many aspects of life in Italy and has had a fantastic first season. The passion of the fans is both a blessing and a pressure. He is worshipped like a god, which makes simple daily activities outside training difficult. The intense attention can sometimes feel overwhelming.”.
Since then, rumors about McTominay's future have surfaced, linking him to several clubs like Barcelona, Tottenham, and Newcastle. Many reports suggest the midfielder is ready to return to the Premier League and does not rule out reuniting with his old club if conditions are right.
However, recent statements from McTominay somewhat dampen hopes for a reunion with Manchester United. Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, the former Red Devils midfielder affirmed: “I am genuinely happy in Naples.”
Earlier, in an interview with the BBC during the summer, McTominay also expressed his fondness for the people and lifestyle of the city: “The people of Naples are wonderful, incredibly passionate. Wherever you go, you hear ‘Forza Napoli’. They want to talk, to connect, and that always inspires me every time I step on the pitch.”.
These comments indicate that although the future remains uncertain, McTominay currently places full trust and loyalty in Napoli rather than contemplating a return to Old Trafford.
Despite McTominay’s declaration of wanting to stay with Napoli, the Serie A champions may not share the same view. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli is facing significant financial problems. Specifically, Napoli is said to have fallen below the 0.8 threshold set by Serie A regulations.
If the situation worsens, Napoli will face difficulties in the transfer market due to league restrictions. Even worse, under Antonio Conte’s management, the team could be banned from signing players, similar to what Lazio is currently experiencing.
In this context, with his market value soaring, McTominay — one of Napoli’s biggest assets — is seen as a prime candidate for sale to generate a substantial transfer fee if the club faces financial constraints.
Therefore, although he wishes to remain at Napoli long-term, McTominay might have to leave the club as early as summer 2026. At that point, MU and several other clubs will approach the Scottish star. As a lifelong loyal Red Devils fan, the possibility of McTominay choosing to return to Old Trafford under these circumstances is entirely plausible.
