The VFF (Vietnam Football Federation) has chosen a cautious approach for Asiad 2026, proactively seeking approval from authorities to prioritize nurturing the next generation of players.
Following the 2025 VFF annual congress, the proposal to send the U21 team to represent Vietnam’s men’s football at Asiad 2026 quickly captured attention. This is regarded as a strategic decision, clearly showing VFF’s long-term vision amid Vietnamese football’s pursuit of greater ambitions.
In a press statement, VFF Vice President Nguyễn Xuân Vũ said this plan was agreed upon by the Executive Committee. He emphasized: “The Executive Committee agreed to send the U21 team to Asiad 2026 because by 2027 this group will be eligible for SEA Games 34 in Malaysia. Most strong teams like Japan and South Korea also sent their U20 squads to previous Asiads to prepare for bigger stages like the Olympics.”
The key highlight from the VFF leadership’s statement is the acceptance of not placing performance pressure. Vice President Nguyễn Xuân Vũ clearly stated the federation’s stance by saying: “We have requested permission from the Vietnam Department of Sports to accept no performance targets at Asiad, focusing instead on developing young players. The Department will respond officially on this matter later.”
According to VFF, treating Asiad 2026 as a “breeding ground” will help the current U21 team gain valuable top-level competitive experience. Young players will face the continent’s strongest opponents, thereby building the resilience and foundation needed for SEA Games 34 and the 2028 Olympic qualifiers.
In fact, Vietnamese football took a similar path at Asiad 2022, when the Olympic team, mainly composed of U20 players, was given early exposure. Although they did not advance far, many players significantly developed and became key figures in important national team campaigns.
VFF stated that the selection of the coaching staff for Asiad 2026 depends on targets approved by the sports authorities. In the context of sustainable development for Vietnamese football, the decision to not emphasize results at Asiad is seen as a necessary step for the long-term future.
