Despite being ahead for the majority of the game, the Vietnam U19 futsal squad lost to Malaysia in the penalty shootout, preventing them from claiming the bronze medal.
In the third-place playoff of the Championship 2025 Southeast Asia U19 Futsal Championship, the Vietnam U19 team unfortunately fell to their U19 Malaysian rivals in the penalty shootout, missing the chance to win a medal.
The Vietnam U19 side started stronger with Nguyễn Trương Hoàng Long scoring in the 5th minute. After taking the lead, the players in white stayed focused and prevented their opponents from scoring.
However, in the second half, Malaysia U19 adopted an all-out attacking strategy, continuously pressuring Vietnam’s goal but the team managed to hold firm. Just when victory seemed certain, Vietnam was shocked as Malaysia scored two quick goals by Iqbal Hazim and Aidil Zakwan in the 39th and 40th minutes. The drama intensified in the final moments when Thạc Hiếu equalized, sending the match to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.
During the penalty shootout, Malaysia U19 demonstrated greater composure, narrowly winning 4-3 and securing third place.
For the Vietnam U19 team, coached by Tuấn Anh, despite holding the advantage until the final minutes, they could not maintain the lead and finished in fourth place overall.
This defeat for the Vietnam U19 futsal team marks a disappointing year for Vietnamese men’s futsal. Earlier that day, the U16 team also lost 1-2 to Myanmar in the third-place match. At SEA Games 33, the Vietnam futsal team also finished fourth despite initially aiming to compete for the gold medal.
