Both Vietnamese teams surprisingly left the AFF tournament empty-handed.

Both the U16 and U19 Vietnamese futsal squads were defeated in the third-place playoff of the 2025 Southeast Asian Futsal Championship.

Although it seemed like victory was assured, the Vietnam U19 futsal team conceded an equalizer to Malaysia U19 with only 6 seconds left, then lost in the penalty shootout, missing out on the bronze medal at the 2025 U19 Southeast Asian Futsal Championship.

Previously, Malaysia’s U19 futsal team had impressed by only losing to Thailand U19 in penalties after a thrilling 4-4 semifinal draw, proving to be a tough opponent. In this match, Vietnam U19 futsal played very well and led until the final moments.

However, at the decisive moment with just 6 seconds remaining, Malaysia U19 pushed forward and scored the equalizer to make it 2-2, courtesy of Haykal. The match then went to a 6-meter penalty shootout to decide the winner. In the penalty kicks, Malaysia U19 futsal won 4-3, securing the bronze medal, while Vietnam U19 futsal ended the tournament in a disappointing fourth place.

Earlier, Vietnam’s younger U16 futsal team also lost the third-place match. Having previously come from behind to beat the same opponent in the group stage, the U16 team could not replicate that success and lost 1-2 to Myanmar U16 in the bronze medal match of the 2025 Southeast Asian U16 Futsal Championship.

The match ended with a 2-1 victory for Myanmar U16 futsal, earning them third place in the 2025 Southeast Asian U16 Futsal Championship. Meanwhile, Vietnam U16 futsal finished fourth—a result below initial expectations but still providing valuable lessons and experiences for the future development of the young players.

This was the first time the Southeast Asian Football Federation organized futsal tournaments for the U16 and U19 age groups, marking an important milestone in youth futsal development in the region. This event created significant opportunities for young players, especially since Southeast Asia currently lacks an official youth futsal competition. Unfortunately, in their debut, Vietnam’s U16 and U19 futsal teams only managed to finish fourth overall.
