Manchester United dropped points again with a 2-2 draw against Burnley! Fletcher's activation of Sheshko wasn't enough, fans are calling for Solskjaer.

Following Ruben Amorim's exit, interim boss Darren Fletcher led the team, adopting a four-back setup, yet the team still failed to secure a top-four spot. United played out a 2-2 draw at Turf Moor with Burnley, resulting in a third straight stalemate, all against teams in the league's bottom five, including those ranked last and second-last.

Fletcher, responding to public demand, deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation. Captain Bruno Fernandes returned from injury to start in the number 10 role, forming the attack alongside Sheshko, Patrick Doku, and Cunha. Casemiro and Ugarte operated as defensive midfielders, while the backline remained Diogo Dalot, Eden Haiven, Lisandro Martinez, and Luke Shaw, with goalkeeper Sena Ramens in goal as usual.

The managerial change did not bring a good start; in the 13th minute, Burnley launched a direct pass down the left, Bashir Humphreys delivered a decisive cross, Haiven stretched to intercept but the ball deflected off his right foot and crossed the line, putting United 0-1 behind Burnley. This was Haiven’s second consecutive match where he was partly responsible for conceding. On the sidelines, Fletcher remained motionless while the camera focused on United CEO Omar Belada and sporting director Jason Wilcox, who buried their faces in their collars.

Fletcher's tactical setup had a clear flaw: Cunha was positioned on the right wing where he appeared uncomfortable and ineffective. His only real chance came when he drifted back to the left side for a free kick, connecting with Casemiro’s headed flick before volleying, but Humphreys cleared the ball off the line.

However, the new coach’s tactics did activate the €85 million striker Sheshko, who was lively in the first half, attempting multiple headers and shots, notably a powerful header just before halftime that was brilliantly saved by former Red Devils keeper Martin Dúbravka.

Manchester United briefly thought they had scored through Lima in a corner scramble, but he clearly pushed defender Kyle Walker, leading referee Stuart Attwell to rule the goal out.

In stoppage time of the first half, Bruno slipped a through ball to Doku, who chipped the goalkeeper but saw his shot blocked by Burnley defender Maxim Estève, leaving United trailing 0-1 at the break.

After the interval, Sheshko finally found his shooting boots. Bruno delivered a diagonal pass from the right, Sheshko timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap and fired a low right-footed shot into the net, leveling the score at 1-1.

United then created two more good scoring chances, but Bruno’s powerful strike and Haiven’s header both missed the target.

Ten minutes later, Sheshko struck again with a brace. Receiving a left-wing cross from Doku, he volleyed the ball into the net with his right foot, putting United ahead 2-1. The new coach’s arrival helped Sheshko reach his best form this season, ending a nine-match goal drought by scoring twice in one game, effectively doubling his goal tally!

Unfortunately, Fletcher substituted Bruno in the 60th minute, likely a forced decision since the Portuguese midfielder had just returned from a two-week injury absence. The substitution didn’t pay off—less than five minutes after the captain left, Burnley’s first shot on target changed the scoreline.

Substitute Jayden Anthony controlled the ball, dribbled past Luke Shaw, and curled a left-footed shot that Ramens could not reach. The score became 2-2, and this Burnley player, sharing names with Jadon Sancho and Anthony, erased United’s lead.

During the match, Fletcher brought on Lenny Yaro, Mason Mount, and former Amorim reject Zirkzee along with Kobi Meno. His final substitution was young player Shay Lacy, not his own son Jack Fletcher, demonstrating his impartiality. Fletcher’s other twin son, Tyler, was not included in the matchday squad.

This choice was a near-miraculous substitution; just one minute after coming on, Lacy cut inside and took a shot that was denied by the crossbar. United had to settle for a point. This was Burnley’s seventh unbeaten game in the Premier League this season. For clubs fighting relegation, Manchester United has become an easy source of points.

On the table, United did take advantage of Chelsea’s loss to leapfrog them, but Brentford surged ahead to fifth place after a 3-0 win over Sunderland. Newcastle also overtook the Red Devils on goal difference, leaving Fletcher’s team in seventh place.

This match made Fletcher’s chances of becoming the permanent interim manager very slim. Traveling United fans chanted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s name to the tune of “Oh What A Night.” Carrick’s name was also sung but not with the same volume as Solskjaer’s.

Red Devils supporters also voiced their dissatisfaction with owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. A banner in the stands read: “Jim can’t fix this.”

In the end, Fletcher did receive some praise from fans. “Darren Fletcher, football genius!” Yet, with the 2-2 result, this claim was hard to accept. Post-match, Fletcher insisted United should have won. “We ended up with just a draw, which is very disappointing,” he said. “Looking at the stats, we created many attacking chances, broke through their defense multiple times, took 30 shots, and even had a goal disallowed. The chances we made were more than enough to win!”

However, Fletcher’s assessment highlighted United’s biggest issue this season: plenty of attacking opportunities squandered and conceding easily on defense. It seems tactically difficult to fix. Perhaps the Red Devils need Solskjaer to inject energy and change their luck, just like the title of his most famous fan song: “You Are My Sunshine.”
